help - Holly's Jeep died on the highway

She was driving along rt 84 and the engine died. Cranks and cranks but doesn't start. Towed it to the house

I can hear the fuel pump run when you turn the key
Plenty of voltage at the battery
Checked the connections
No codes (no reader - just ignition on trick)

It just acts like it's out of gas (show's 1/2 tank)
Tried hitting the gas tank with a mallet- it sounds like something is bounciing around in there

She was wheeling last weekend - came down hard on the tank. Could the pick-up fallen off?

Anything else I can check

Any input would be appreciated

Frank

Does the pump cycle off after a bit? how's the preassure at the rail.

It's quite possible the pickup got knocked off, I've heard of that happening on the TJ's... Even heard of the pump assembly getting punched up out of the top...

Did it start to sputter before it died? You can also try filling the tank see if it runs, if so I'd definately say pickup.

.

No matter how many times I cycle the key - the pump runs for a few seconds each time.
She didn't hear a sputter (had the music too loud)

I don't know what else to check
I didn't want to fill it up if I may have to drop the tank

On the fuel rail should be a "tire valve" push it in, got fuel? if not try the CPS... crank case position sensor.

After you cycle it a few times, push the shrader valve and you should get a spray of gas, if no gas then it's definelty fuel pump / fuel regulator type thing.

If you get gas than it's something else. :why:

Sounds like Jeff may be on to something. Could be the pickup broke off. The gallon of gas may be worth a try. If it is half full, still going to be a bitch to bring down!

Let me know if you decide to drop the tank. I'll give you a hand with it. May be a good Idea to pull it over to the garage.

How?

siphon the fuel out first. A piece of nylon tubing about 1/4" dia and stiff works pretty good. That translucent stuff. You may want to check where the pickup is. On the older cherokee's it's on the front of the tank and can be removed without dropping the tank.

If you can siphon out, add a few gallons and see if it will restart, if it does, siphon it out and drop the tank.

I checked the Haynes manual this evening - you can't siphon gas from the filler neck because of a 1 way valve. Some KJ's have an access panel under the carpet to get to the pump/sending unit assembly. They say to siphon gas from there. If it doesn't have the access panel - you have to drop the tank (full) :swear_mad:

This 3.7 V6 is all new for me - can't find the fuel rail, has coil on plugs, etc...

Also - I tried getting codes using the push the trip reset button while turning the key on. Came up with no code.

If anyone has a code reader for Mopar 2002+ ? please let me know

It's acting the same way my 4.0L was when I had a clogged fuel filter and/or vaporlock

Try cycling the key to build pressure then crack open one of the fuel filter fittings. You'll be able to tell if there's pressure ;)

There will be fuel and even if there's no fuel pressure it will drip (possibly pour), but pressure will make for a nice squirt of gas before pressure drops.

As for siphoning fuel, put a hose over the fuel filter end that you opened in step one and siphon the fuel through the pump.

Thanks for all the input.

Pulled the pump/pick-up assembly through the handy access panel in the cargo area (nice for Jeep to add this feature negating dropping the tank )

The assembly sits in a bracket at the bottom of the tank. It seems that a few major drop-offs at RocktoberFest may have dis-lodged the pump assembly from it's original position to tipped on it's side. Sending unit read 1/2 tank - when empty

Snapped it back in place - good to go

Maybe time for a gas tank skidplate...
