Help! YJ dead on the side of the road!

Ran out of Gas today on Rt 6. (good because I'm swapin the tank tomorrow and had a spare can)
4.0L MPI
Threw a few gallons in and tried to start it. It idled rough for a minute and died. tried that twice. Can't touch the throttle or it dies. Then after a few tries, it just turns over and doesn't catch. I've never run out of gas with fuel injection before. Is there anything I can try? I tried venting the fuel rail and shot a stream of hot gas in the air. This is with the key off.
Started to rain, so we towed strapped it back to the house behind my truck.

What should I try next? Finish venting the rail? Pull injectors?:?:
I'm clueless with these non-carbed engines...

Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

Good thing you need to swap tanks anyway, chances are the fuel pump sucked in all the grit that was stuck on the bottom of your old tank therefore effectively killing it. Or maybe the fuel filter caught most of it either way it aint good for the fuel pump.

It may have some psi. but not enough to get it to run.

Thanks for the input - actually it's an older carbed YJ with a swapped in fuel injection. So I have an external fuel pump and filter. AND a pre-filter! So that may be where to start looking! But since I'm getting fuel at the rail, there still may be other issues... But you have me thinkin - maybe I should check the pressure with a gauge tomorrow (even though the gas shot over the hood when I hit the schrader valve on the rail  ). Thanks again for the help

you may have an issue with the pickup. the symptoms you describe are basically fuel starvation. There is no trick to these setups. If there is a good pickup, and enough fuel in the tank, you are all set. It's not like a deisel where you need to bleed the rails ans such.

Try throwing a couple more gallons of gas into it. I had a problem with my jeep. I ran close to empty once and the truck would stall every time I touched the gas. I just kept it a line or two more full and the problem went away. If something happens to the pickup, raising the gas level above the problem could get you home.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Went out this morning and it started right up. Must have been vapor lock (have an external pump). Started swapping the tank today... Thanks again!

when you change the tank, use compressed air to blow out the lines, if you have the means to do so. blow out each section of line to be sure it is clear of any kinds of blockages. Remember, just because you have good pressure (psi), doesn't necessarily mean you have sufficient flow or volume. This is usually caused by an obstruciton in the lines.

Thanks Donny. I'll take the precaution tomorrow. I'll be re-plumbing the fuel line from the tank to the pump then. IF I can find a filler neck hose to the tank since mine was rotted out. May have to order one from DC.

Napa sells the filler neck fuel hose in bulk length. Much cheaper than DC. Just make sure it is Fuel filler and not just radiator hose. Won't last too long. Temp fix only.

Ahh - I was tempted with radiator hose today! Good call! And Napa was closed... Maybe tomorrow... Hpoefully Napa is open on Sundays
