Herculiner....nice!

Well I had Thursday off so I tackled the Herculiner project.   :grinyes:

I took the rig apart Wednesday night.  I removed both seats, center console, carpeting, and rear add-a-trunk.  This took less than two hours.  The kit comes with a Brillo type pad to remove the clear coat from the paint.  This was pretty useless so I went at the clear coat with a small hand held orbital sander.  This is needed so the Herc sticks to the metal.

Next was to vaccum all the crap out and use Acetone to get rid of any grease and the like.  On Thursday AM I started at 8am and applied the first coat of Herc.  This went pretty quick.  I did the whole tub and a hour later put the second coat on.  I was dry enough by 4pm so I reinstalled my seats, etc and let it cure overnight.

This came out great!     It appears to have bonded to the metal very well and is a tough coating.  I put extra on the floor of the drivers side.  I did this as my dogs shed like crazy and I cant get the hairs out of the carpeting.  The hairs can be vacuumed off the Herc easily.  It looks tough too.  This should be standard from the Jeep factory if you ask me!

I'm sure the pros have a great product but too expensive for me.  The Herc, acetone, and masking tape cost under 100 bucks!!!!  Sorry bout the long post but this is a great affordable mod in my opinion....    I'd post pics but my camera took a shi**er....

Happy Jeepin!

Rick - Thanks for the write-up!  I've been toying with doing tht upgrade to my YJ.  $100 isn't bad to do a TJ/YJ tub

PS - missed your updated rig this weekend at Mahem

Hey Rick, just one question. Did you use spray on or roll on liner   I tried spray on from NAPA once and had a lot of trouble with it :swear_mad: so I was wondering if it was just a cheap product or if roll on maked the difference.
Thanks

The Herculiner brand (gallon size) comes with two rollers and one brush (for $85 bucks at Auto Zone).  I did the detail work with the brush and then rolled the rest.  Everyone that has seen it says it looks like it was sprayed on.  The gallon size is plenty for two coats and then some additional for a third coat in high wear areas.  It says you can use a sprayer but this stuff is kinda thick.  The roller and brush are more than adequate.  The only down side is it takes your vehicle off line for a day while it dries....

I also used Acetone to wipe the bed down as I couldn't find the Xylene stuff.  Definitely do this outside on a breezy day cause the fumes are nasty....unless that is your thing

After a year in the mountains of Afghanistan that just might be my thing
I actually plan on doing it during my 2 week r&r whenever that comes. so my jeep will still be in storage anyway. thanks for the advice though, I cant wait to get home and try it out

what did you do about the bolts for the seat belts and seats. did you paint around? or tape?

When I did my YJ 2 years ago, I used 1 gallon of the red Herc. It did 2 coats with 1/3 of the can left, so I poured the rest into each floor pan and spread it around evenly. its like 1/4 " thick. Pretty tough astuff. The best part of it is hozing out the tub after a weekend of mudding! :grinyes:

Hey AB.....as far as the bolts go, I don't run with a rear seat.  I removed the brackets for the rear seat as well as the bolts for the seat belts.  I painted over the holes and no Herc went inside to the threads.  After it was all dry I just reinstalled the bolts without seat brackets.  *****Don't tighten these bolts too much*****.  I did, and I they caused an annoying squeak.  Just barely tighten these rear seat bolts and you should be all set.

Its been a few weeks not and no regrets. It is one of my favorite low $$$ mods :grinyes:.  I don't notice any difference as far as noise, now that the squeak it gone.
