holy brakes on fire!!!

so i was driving around town the other day and i didnt feel that the truck had any pep and it was pulling to the right a bit, so i pulled over after about 15 minutes of driving....and found out my tires was smoking like carzy...

well it wasnt the tire, it was the brakes.....so i let them cool down..bad idea :disagree:
they stcuk to the rotor and it was hard to get going again so after i got the truck moving again i drove slowly towards home...



you can see where this is going i think.....


i then started to pick up speed becasue the brakes felt looser so i thought it might have unsiezed finally...wrong again... :swear_mad:


i decided to pull into a service station to see if i could use a jack to take the wheel off and look at the damage, as i walked around the side of the jeep, i could see FLAMES shooting out of the brake pads and caliper.....the guy in the station used a soda can and my iced tea bottle to extinguish the flames.....then we got the caliper cooled down by sticking a huge block of ice on it.... :swear_mad:

then 10 minutes later we took apart the brakes and saw the damage....clamped the brake line and i drove home using half my front brakes...

now i am in the garage...need to fix them...what part need to be check about lines, pads and rotor and calipers?
 
if you got it hot enough to catch fire, i would flush the brake fluid out as well, could have damaged teh wheel bearing if you boiled the grease out of it, and like steve said Caliper Pads and rotor

i was told to do both sides at the same time....is this true?
 
Whenever you do pads on one side always do them on the other. I wouldnt replace the other caliper unless it wont push back like the siezed one. Flushing the fluid would be a good idea.
 
make sure the wheel bearings are tight while you are in there.
 
Alway both calipers, becuase if one side is locking up, the other can be on the way.  Also, as was standard practice at school, if you do only one, it can cause an unequal pulling on one side.  Stop really fast and you will sometimes pull harder on the nice new caliper being it is free and easy.

and at $14 to $30 a caliper, why not?

as said, fluid is a great change,

wheel bearings are sealed on the yj, so usually if you do pop out the hub assembly, you can only add grease to the back one... 

And being you probably cooked the rotor, it is a good idea to change being it will probably be warped...

and at $22 a rotor,,, why not...

Calipers: $30 not including core
Fluid: $2
Rotors: $44
Pads: $19

Enitire new front brake system for $95
 
Don't forget the rotor!  Because you cooled it down quick like that, probably warped. 
Suggested parts.

Brake fluid, Caliper, two rotors, new pads and a brake line. 

Definitely check you wheel bearings!

Jeep brakes are easy!
 
I was thinking don't change any parts but get marshmellows, Hershey's and graham crackers.......













(but seriously get all new parts, brakes get hot, but on fire is too much).
 
yeah

i pricd out the parts but i didnt check on rotors.....cuz i thought they would be $$ so i was just going to have them turned....

how much of a pain is it to change the wheel bearings? or should i not worry about it?
 
no, the bearings are sealed.  Just keep in mind that they may go becuase of the heat...  If they go, you will get noise and play... that is all and then you change them if needed.
 
what i should have asked is that should i pull the bearings while i am in there in the first place and be done with it all at once??

Like Damon said, The newer jeeps have a sealed hub assembly and the bearings cannot be pulled and relubed, you need to replace the whole hub assembly. I wouldn't think you'd want to replace it for no reason @ $150 per hub (factory is more)! I'd stick with the brakes and wait to see if the bearings actually are damaged.
 
thats what i did when i found out the hub assemblies were 210 a side... :eek:

all the new parts are in place and i even bought new rototrs to be safe becasue they are not that expensive compared to truning the old ones, plus the one that got hot was wicked warped...
 
every warped rotor I had trued has warped again.  Once it's warped and trued there are thick and thin spots on the rotor.  Those differences in thickness will make the rotor warp even faster the second time.
