How strong is a Full Case Detroit Locker?

I have a Spartan lunchbox locker up front and love it, it’s gives out just before the breaking point for parts. I get all the pulling traction and have never broken a front axle part (knock on wood)!

Now you've done it! :rotflmao:

Well, I finally got a hold of Eaton to check on parts.  The Tech guy on the phone asked which one I needed.  When I told him I needed 3 parts he said but a new locker.  He then gave me the prices,  the center gear is $300 and the side gears are $150 each, so I see his point.  I asked him why the case bolts came out.  He actually had an answer and said the Dana 30's really flex a lot and causes the case bolts to stretch and come loose.

If that's the case, I'll have the same problem again with a new Detroit.  I think I am going to try the full case Spartan.  If it isn't aggressive enough for me, I'll put it in another Jeep or throw a 44 front under mine.  That Amazon price is a hundred bucks less than other places I've checked.

Or, I could just weld up the center of the Detroit and have max traction.

You could scrounge a stock carrier and run the lunchbox. Might be cheaper and ya have to shim something either way

With how built that Jeep is it would be a waste to run a LSD.  I would go full case or a lunchbox.  Building a truss wouldn't be that hard.

I like the idea of swapping it out for a D44.  Bracket kits are relatively cheap.  Im sure you could sell your D30 Hub kit to get some of your money back.

Had the Jeep out today and my Detroit was working great. Drove the Jeep home fine. Just went to drive the Jeep and it’s making noise from the front diff... I’ll pull the cover this week.

As I suspected, the bolts backed out on my Detroit again. Pumpkin is full of glitter.... Locker was still working, but all the bolts are gone. Time to switch to a different locker... Honestly debating just going to a lunchbox. I have an open carrier. I don’t drive in the winter so really no need for a selectable.

It will be interesting to see what the gears look like inside the Detroit.  I wonder if we have twins!

I wonder if there would be a way to use different bolts and use safety wire like on a plane?

Safety wire is a good idea. In my case though, this locker isn’t going back in. Regardless of its condition. Looking into options now. It appears my gears are ok. I’ll get a better look when I pull the carrier.

I assume with this much metal in the oil, changing the bearings is a good idea?

unless the race is brinelled, they should be ok to run. but for the cost of the bearings, worth swapping them.

Was the locker working ? Im curious where are the metal came from

The internet says that the carrier is the weak point. I ran lunchbox locker in the front of my XJ, and front and back in my YJ on 35's for (9 years). I broke axle shafts, but never had any locker/carrier issues.

My R&P was fine, hope yours is too. Bearings might ne OK.  (But they are cheap)

Take a look at the rollers and see if you see any flakes mushed onto them.  If they look clean and the races look clean you might have caught it in time.

Th Eaton guy said it was from the Dana 30 flexing and stretching the case bolts.  That's why they loosen up.

The Detroit is a full case so that rules out the carrier.

Jeremy has a beefy truss on his and had the same problem. I would have thought that would take care of the axle tubes flexing.

Hmmm, back to square one.
