Humming Noise after Paragon

After the Paragon trip I've noticed a problem. There is a loud humming noise (sounds almost like an airplane propeller) coming from the front end, it gets louder as road speed increases

When we were driving home from Paragon I thought it was because I had the tire pressure a little too high, but lowered it and it's still there.

Any idea what this could be or what I should be checking?

98 XJ Sport, 4.0, Auto, NP231, Dana 30 front and Chrysler 8.25 rear

My first guess would be a unit hub bearing gone bad, does it get louder turning to one side rather than the other?

Rey - make sure you clean the mud out the of brake rotors and brake drums.  And on the inside of the rims!  Mud stuck in there will cause vibrations.  Shouldn't be the tires (Holly ended up driving home 2+hrs from Mahem aired down to 12PSI)

@Jeepinmaxx - I'll clean out the mud just in case. Thanks for the heads up

@Crzyfrlssjeep & @Bullet - Thanks, it does make more noise as I'm going around a left bend vs. a right bend. Is it best to just change both sides?

@Bullet - Where'd you get them for $85? I saw them for about $85 inc. shipping on Tapco/Ebay. Locally, here's what I found... Dealer $312, NAPA $112, Pep Boys $170, Advance $159, Autozone $140 for Timken

Just so I'm sure, this is what you're talking about right?

If it's making more noise turning to the left then the right side is the one with the problem as that is where the weight is being transferred to.

It'll last along time before in "BLAMS"....ok still to drive.

Thanks Detour! I was wondering that because I won't be able to fix it until this weekend. I'll just be driving it to work about a 35 mile round trip for the rest of the week.

CrzyFrlssJeep - thanks to your input - I finally figured out the vibration on my Dakota!
been bothering me for months.  Humming louder on the highway.  louder when turning to the left.  Goes away when turning right!  Thanks for the input!

Sorry for the highjack Rey   - now back on topic

Detour is correct, it will last you a while.  They have 2 sealed bearing in each hub, so usually they last for a while even after 1 starts to annoy you.

For me I prefer the dealer hubs, granted higher brands like Napa should be better, but definitely stay away from cheaper places.

I got a hub from Advance for a new Blazer at work, and it looked really nice, had the ABS wire and all.  I was sort of surprised that it looked so high quality for the price I paid,,,  until I installed it.  It worked fine, but it had the slighted amount of play in the bearing.  Not enough to wear, no noise and it did not give me problems for the year I drove it.  However being there was that little bit of play, (which you could NOT feel by shaking the wheel, (nothing loose))  when you hit a bump or a bridge seam it would give a small clunk.  Not bad, most people would not notice it, but for me, it drove me nuts.

Last one I got (through a friend, who can help you to)  I paid $175 at the dealer

Well we had a long day of wrenching. I am much olbliged to Frank, Bruce, Jeff and James (son of Jeff) for all the help. The hub bearings had  a little play, the axle u-joints were dry and rusty inside , and the rotors were grooved. All tolled on my XJ we did, new Unit Hub Bearings, new Front axle u-joints, new rotors, new brake pads.

Frank was good enough to rent a torque wrench that went up to 175ft-lbs and Bruce's garage made everything much easier.

The u-joints that are in my XJ are smaller than the u-joints in all the parts listings for a 98 XJ. Once we got the right ones they went in really easy. No snags mechanically. Now it rides like buttah and no more noise from the front end. :grinyes:

Rey – it was great wrenching with you guys today.
It actually went pretty well mechanically
We got both unit hubs off in record time (~ 1/2hr to 40 min for both)
Then the saga begins!

Run to AutoZone to get Rotors and pads(after we found out we needed them)
Get back and start to install the Spicer U-Joints from FleetPride
Pop a cap head off in the process
Check with stock – the Spicers are longer and larger!
Rey and I run to AutoZone (no luck) and then to Napa (now ~5pm)  They have 2 in stock.
Get back and start to install – the Napa ones are the wrong size!  (although listed for a 98 Cherokee in the book!)
Run back to Napa (now closed)
Go to Advanced – the clerk pulls up the number for the Cherokee – brings it out- it’s AGAIN the wrong one!
The clerk says – “I own six jeeps (mid ‘50s CJ to current with a LS6!)  I’ll eyeball it” He gets the right one – we head back (Rey gave him a NEJEEP Card )
We get back bang the u-joints out in a ½ hr
Install axles, install new unit hubs (and re-install )
Got the brakes buttoned up, test drive, top off both diffs =DONE!
(plus top off the diffs on the XJ and Jeff's TJ, and driveshaft check on my YJ)

All said and done - started at 2pm and finished cleaning up around 10PM - not bad for a bunch of newbies  :grinyes:

Thanks again for the use of Bruce's wrenchfest headquarters, Jeff and son for coming by to help out, Rey for letting us practice on your Jeep, and of course Damon/Nomad for for teaching us how to do U-joints and unit hubs via previous projects - now we are able to pass it foward

Yeah that was a good time.  Enjoyed it.  We actually poped the end off of TWO end caps, one of the old ones coming off so was no big deal...  Then the new one.

Now I'll ALWAYS be checking against the old one and not trusting the parts morons...

Rey, hurry up and break something else so we can wrench again...  :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

Sounds like the axle shafts in the 98 (should have 760-x/297 size ujoints) had been switched with an earlier set.  the old 260 style

maybe even the whole axle.

heck I bet if you check the part number for the shafts will cross reference with a early 90s  (say 93)  YJ or XJ.

That would make sense - the u-joints were the same size as my trail spares (90 YJ)

It's a jeep.

Which means it could have come from the factory with what ever they found in the parts bin.

But it should have used the 297 size and not the 260.  Ah well.  I've been running 260's for years and not broken anything.  Don't use a lot of skinny pedal on the rocks and they'll work fine.

Sounds to me like we need to do a TJ Oil pan replacement next! Just let me know when and where...  :grinyes:

I'll have to pick one up..

Hey Zack,
If you see or talk to Shrek, can you ask him if he still has that 4.0 oil pan he said I could grab from him?

Anyway We will be doing the brakes on the XJ and maybe checking the YJs 4wd this Sunday.  Maybe a small wrench fest again at the KakiRubi/Jeepinmax Garage!  If anybody wants to give a hand, they are more than welcome!

We Still have some Beer left! :grinyes: :grinyes: :grinyes:

Rey/Jeff - if you want to learn how to do rear brakes on an XJ - it looks like class will be session Sunday   (class with beverages :grinyes:)
