Impending Catastrophic Engine Failure: Damn, Nevermind

Got a nasty howling/knocking noise from the oil pan area. I'm assuming it's rod and main bearings. Anybody do an "in-vehicle" replacement of the bearings? Wondering what I will need as far as bearings. I believe I can get away with doing the rod and main bearings, oil pump and o.p.g. Anything else I would need? Can I do this without seperating the transmission? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Doing bearings without turning down the crank is just putting lipstick on a pig.

i dont believe you can get the pan down in a xj.

I think I should have plenty of room to drop the pan. 4.5" lift makes for some nice clearance. TW, how hard to remove the crank in the vehicle?

how long? I'll probably replace all the rod and main bearings. I wanna be ready for this weekend.

Can't change the main bearings without taking the tranny off. The crank won't drop with it still connected to the tranny. The connecting rod bearings will though.

Doing it upside down on your back, Big pain in the a**!!!

I'd really recomend pulling the engine, it would be easier.

As for time. Plan on the whole weekend. Can't rush bearings, a little dirt and your back where you started.

Dammitt, I mean, Woo-hoo!!! I need to stop jumping to conclusions without fully examining the situation. I was so pissed when I started hearing the noise, I just instantly condemned the engine. Tonight, I decided to do a full diag. Started it up and listened to the pan. Same noise. Then I decided I would, just for the hell of it, take the belt off. Holy Sh!it!!! No noise!!! A/C Compressor crapped out. Bearings let go, pulley flopping all over. I can't believe that the noise is going straight down the bracket to the block. Sounds a lot like a lower bearing. Thanks for all of everyone's help. I will definately take all of your advise into consideration, but hopefully not for another one or two hundred K or so.

Yeah, but it was my own vehicle, and I was really pissed and didn't take my time on the initial diag.
