My dad has a 6cyl 98 TJ, he wants to take the 5 spd out and put in an auto. Because YJ's that have the same 4.0 engine can you take any auto tranny from a 4.0 and put it in the TJ?? Also, XJ's have the same engine as well, can you steal those too? Finally, what are the numbers of the trannys that will fit, ex. T999, ...?? this way i can keep an eye out for him. Thanks!!

i believe aw4, and tf999 like you said were both available behind the 4.0 and they both will fit, You just need to make sure you have the proper computer to run it, and flex plate for the motor, Also will probably need different driveshafts

AW4 Was never put into a YJ or TJ. TOOOOO Long. You'd end up with about a 6" rear drivshaft.

As Detour said. Start hunting for a TJ in a boneyard with an Auto. That way you can get all the other stuff you'll need like the wire harness, shifter, etc. etc.

Although, unless you have put big $$ into aftermarket stuff, you'll be better off just trading it at a used car lot for a TJ with an Auto.

Good to know. Thanks Jon.

one note though, The guy didn't want to use the computer, so he had some sort of redneck engineering hack job of a wiring harness set up. He also had to rotate the pinion on the rear axle and run a double carden shaft. (Whole reason I saw it was because my buddy needed a second opinion in telling him you couldn't run a CV driveshaft and keep the slip yoke)

I would have just gone with a TF999.

Although I think best bet would be 700R4 built up with a RMVB in it. My buddy put one in his blazer that was the funnest vehicle I haver ever driven
