hey guys im almost about to make a decision, but i need your input. i have an s10 with an open differential that has a tendency of getting stuck in situations where there is little traction. such as snowy driveways or dew covered grass. but since i use the truck as a daily commuter to school and hauling stuff for my dad.
im worried that if i get a locker then when im driving on the highway in the snow will i spin out of control? ive never had a locker before.
if i get a limited slip im worried that ill be kicking myself because i didnt get a locker if i get stuck in a snow bank.
any advice would be appreciated, thanks Joe

Get the locker.
Snow is slippery enough that while you're driving down the road, it doesn't have enough "tire bite" in a turn to get the clutches to slip. It acts like a lockerd rear anyway.

so what your saying is that since the snow is too slippery or icy, that is i had a limited slip it wouldnt function properly because there isnt enough traction for its design, but if i get the locker then no matter what ill have traction.
ok but what about those situation when the highway has just been plowed and there is snow and ice and pavement sections, will that give me any problems with the locker?

what do yo think of an Eaton Automatic Locking Differential? i found one USED on ebay for cheap, is this a locker that has clutches that can wear out? item number---150026191717-- check it out and let me know what you think

I drive with a PowerTrax, and love it. I love it even better in the snow.

jmazz xj mark has a good point. although if you get a eaton limited slip with clutches it will give in the turns, if you  put  the additive in at each fluid change you shouldnt have any problems.they can also be rebuilt if need be. ive done eatons in trucks and cars with a ton of power and have not seen any problems. the locker does offer true 2 wheels turning once the teeth mesh, i did one in a 2 wheel drive and the kid stripped the teeth of trying to race on the street(locrite), it wasnt locked in. you should be able to get a detroit for it, yopu wont break that. little rough in tight corners. my .02. pete

thanks pete i ordered the eaton off Ebay it is used but seems that it is in good condition, i have a little 4cyl s10 with not much power but i get it stuck in some situations that are not one-legger freindly, if i have any problems though i will be coming to your shop, thanks. Joe

Boy, I remember those days when all I had was an 89GMC 2wd pickup with a peg and a 350.  One day out hunting with my brother we got stuck in an inch of mud!  Damn street tires!  Put some BFG All Terrains on and it was much improved.  Haven't owned a 2wd since!  Even my lawnmower is a 4wd! :grinyes: :grinyes: :grinyes: :grinyes:
