Loose Steering Column

The steering column on my YJ is getting REALY loose. It's a tilt unit, but the looseness is independent from the tilt mechanism. I have to lift the wheel slightly just to get the key out. Someone mentioned some set-screw that can be tightened - no info in my Chiltons manual. I'm afraid to drive it. Anyway, I'm picking up a non-tilt unit from Smiths 4x4 this evening. How difficult will it be to remove the old unit and install the new one? I assume the wiring harness is the same? How do these things come apart from the steering box? I appreciate any input

Ronnie, thanks for the PM's

Anyway, since I had the puller and special tools (left over from a previous lock cylinder swap on my 442), I tackled strippin' down the column to try to repair the problem. Took most of the morning. I got to a point where I had to lower the column. By now I was thinking I should swap in the newer one (non tilt and no intermittent wipers). After removing it - I saw two of the 3 reverse Torx screws - I could only access one - screw it - I'll put in the the new column. Well - the wireing harnesses didn't look the same! Turns out the tilt vs non-tilt columns are quite different. The connectors are exactly opposite. At this point I'm thinkin' "as long as I can steer it - the 'lectronics don't matter" - I can hot wire it and screw the wipers! Well it turns out you can reverse the plugs and turn them upside down and they'll fit! Fought the whole thing back together after dark and prayed while I connected the ground (Holly with fire extinguisher in hand!)
-everything worked! Signals, wipers, starter, hi-beams etc! Once again, a 2hr project turned into a full day (thankfully - ONLY 1 day!)

 PS... still have to take the top of the new column apart to swap in a new lock cylinder (starting the engine with a screwdriver will get old soon...) and re-clock the steeringwheel about 20 degrees...

No I got the steering box all set, but I still have the scraping noise in my Column... The dealer was able to fix it once, but it only lasted a few days... They said it was a "clip" that let go and allowed the column to slide down,,, or up?

Damon, I have a spare 'clip' if you need. I'm almost an expert after tearing apart YJ columns 3 times in the last week. I have the steering wheel puller and special YJ column compression tool - so if you have time this weekend you can come up and we can bang this out. Also Smith's 4x4 in Franklin has a used '94 tilt column for $150. PM me if you wan't some help.
