Lots Of Rattle Coming From My Jeep's Rear

For some time now, there has been a rattle noise emanating from the back of the Jeep. I was told it was possibly the rear sway bar links and bushings. But after googling it, I found a thread on the Jeep.com forum on this rattle noise. Some seemed to suggest shocks were the culprit. I checked the links yesterday and nothing looks loose. Anybody have the same problem?

Can you replicate the noise by jumping on the rear bumper? If so, have someone do that while you look under the Jeep. Try grabbing the various suspension components, you may be able to feel which one is moving and making noise if you can't see it.

I had a rattle and it was driving me crazy because I couldn't hear it all the time and couldn't find it.  Finally .... it was the heat shield above the muffler.

Another way to check is have someone outside the jeep listening as you move forward and backward quickly from a stop. That may be enough to isolate the source of the noise.

I opened the tailgate and used that to push down on several times to simulate road travel. There's a noise similar to what I hear driving. Unfortunately I can't see what it is.

Empty spray cans? Tom held on to those for the deposits.

I wouldnt consider a shock or sway bar to be a rattle. That would be a thunk ! Solid.  The heat shield is a rattle.  Exhaust usually touching something will rattle.  FjR68

It's definitely coming from the right side. I had a drs apptmt this am and drove there on a very pockmarked road. At times it feels like I'm going to lose something. Just have to find somewhere to bring it or someone to listen.

Sounds like something may have loosened up after your frame repair.  Most likely exhaust though.

I've had this rattle way before the frame repair. Maybe it is the exhaust.

Nope. It sounded more intense this morning, maybe because of the cold. The bitter cold also makes the initial whirring sound coming from the transmission more pronounced. Since I feel sometimes like I'm losing it I need a psychiatrist who drives a TJ!
