:( 5 speed 94 YJ...

Changed out the fluid to Red Line a few weeks back, and now I seem to have the on and off again :( issue of haveing a hard time getting any gear when starting from a dead stop...... again. The odd thing (to me) is that this NEVER happens in first 20 minuts of driving when all is cold - but once it have warmed up I have the issue.

Any thoughts on what to look for, or try to change as a fix before I have to throw myself at the mercy of a Tranny shop? Any Pro's or Cons to changing to a heavier weight fluid?

changed teh tranny fluid or the clutch fluid? Sounds like it is a possible clutch issue more than a tranny issue. If the clutch fluid is getting hot for some reason, it could cause problems. Or if the clutch it self is warn. ITs odd that it only does it once warm though

Sounds like the typical AX 15 synchro problem.

take out the redline and put in penzoil synchromesh. They sell it at autozone.

THe additive s in GL-5 fluid eat away at the brass synchros. You need a yellow metal friendly fluid. I know jeep says to put in GL-5 but DON'T.

The Redline actually did wonders for my YJ... as for the Penzoil, in many replies from RedLine I found that their MT was actually an equal.

I would tend to agree with Paul...

anything specific I can do to check the clutch to be sure one way or the other what I need to start fixing?

Also, I have not done a clutch on a YJ before - any tips?

Just to get some more info: How many miles are on your YJ, what size tires are you running? What do you have for gears? When was the last time you had a clutch done? What kind of driver are you? Do you take off really quick? Do you shift quick, do you rest your foot on the pedal? Don't lie. We're all friends here. The truth will set you free. These are all questions I ask of my clients when they are looking for repair work. :D Just makes repairs easier. I'll be glad to give you a hand. Nomad has plenty of experience with YJ clutches  . Lemme know.

80K on the jeep, 31" MT's, stock gears, no idea on the clutch - have had the jeep 2+ years, no, no, maybe......

I would assume it is probably the original clutch. I would say that it is probably about time for a new one. Don't hold me to that though. Like I said, I'm willing to help.

A bit more info - the problem of getting into gear NEVER happens when the Jeep is in motion, ONLY from a stop. Today after warming up I was at a light and worked through the entire shift patteren before I could shift into a gear and then was able to get into 1st - also, I took the time to think about it, and I would say the clutch does not grab until the pedal is 3/4 of the up (from the floor)....

Stupid question (again) is there any cable adjustment?

Thanks again for the input guys.

OK so I am at a stop and cannot shift back into gear - but if I kill the engine I can shift around all I want - so with that info is it safe to assume a dying clutch - and is there any brand that is better to get as a replacement?

Thanks

we had a ford superduty with 6 spd that had the same problem, ended up being the slave cylinder at the trans was leaking by. replaced the cyl,res and lines. pete

So, when it gets hot, if you shut if off, can you shift into different gears?

Yes...... It ran for a while, then I parked at a wallymart - came out and started it up, after backing out of the spot I could not find a gear to save my life - turn it off and I could shift through the pattern with ease, left it in first started up and away I went.
