Does anyone here have the right kind of dial indicator I could use when I'm ready to fix my TJ?

I really miss driving it already.

I have a dial indicator and magnetic stand. the indicator is good to 5 tenths which is mre than enough. problem is that it is here with me in boston.

Ahhh....gotcha.

I got the price qoute for the "master" set on the Snap-On truck and I think I almost fainted.

Ouch is all I can say.

I believe I need to start fresh because of someone elses install error.

I'm also in need of a pinion depth measuring device.

Did I mention I'm now ASE certified to be doing this type of work?
If only I knew then what I know now I would have never paid ANYONE to install my gears for me.

Oh well, live & learn and learn some more right?

don't you just shim the pinion to set the depth? are you talking a caliper or micrometer to measure the shims? or are you talking an in-lb torque wrench to set the preload.

I spent 2 hours working on setting up gears in my buddies front axle this evening.

What I mean is it's gotta be set up from scratch this time, I want to do this one time only and do it right the first time.

This is all from someone else's install error thats why it's gotta be done this way.

The most important thing for me is putting the pinion gear exactly where it needs to be. (it's the part that failed first) Can't do it without a pinion depth tool.

I can shim the ring gear to wherever it needs to be from there. Thats what the magnetic base dial indicator is for.

Sorry to be so tedious, but thats the way I am.
I either do it right the first time or I won't fix the damn thing at all.

the indicator is for backlash.

you can't set the pinion depth for sure until you get the gear mesh set correctly

I've setup several gear sets for scratch and never used a pinion depth tool. I would imagine it makes things easier but it can be done.

Other people have said that as well, but I wanted to at least learn how to do it that way.

I need this install to last awhile.

Set it once, and forget about it....

i usually use the old shim in the pinion. or you can buy a set up kit from reider racing. these are loose fitting bearings so they slide on and off. once set to correct thickness ,press on the new bearings.may need to r & r once or twice, but it will be cheaper than buying a pinion set up tool & guage. .02 worth(see my add :D )ct axle

i have a mic. if you need it :smt039

I've got that at work now....

Gonna be ordering the gearset and everything I need next week.

I know it's taken me awhile, but time & $$$ are tight for me right now. Too bad I won't be able to convoy to the "Jeep Rally" this year.

Maybe I'll get to do a few fall trail rides before winter gets here though, haven't exactly had the chance to do top down wheeling this year

My winter project will involve fixing my dirt bike and getting the Jeep further where it needs to be. And then? Who knows? Build it bigger, better, and stronger.
