Hey Guys, I over heated the jeep this weekend and it smoked white smoke so Im guessing I blew the Head Gasket. So now I have to replace it. Everyone says its going to be a pain a couple of my buddys and I are going to do it this weekend, Any tips or suggestions on the best way to conquer this project. Thanks
-Bobby

How bad did you overheat it!

I would check the Head, you may have warped or cracked it!

:shakehead: :shakehead:

Gotta watch your TEMP!

I just...or am going through this right now.

My clutch fan crapped out while I was on a long section of serious rocks.
I saw the temp was way above normal, but kept going. When it reached the red section of the gauge, I shut it down to let it cool down until it was just out of the red. This occured three times within a 20-30 minute period until I finished the obsticles.
Two days later, I do my regular post-wheeling maintenance and find the radiator is low, and the oil dipstick level is high. Not good.

Between a quart, to a 1/2 gallon of coolant in the pan, but no smoke.
I pulled the head, had it planed, and replaced the head gasket. (No signs of gasket failure) Still leaked into the pan just as bad if not worse.
There must be a crack in the block or head from overheating it.

To finish the rest of the wheeling season, I used Bar's block and head gasked sealer. It has held up with street driving so far, and I'll be attacking the same set of rocks this weekend to get my revenge.
After that, it's getting a replacement engine for the next season.

If it dumped smoke, the gasket failed. I would reccomend dropping the head off at a machine shop and having it planed in your case. it's a lot of work to do the job twice.

One of my hose's let go and I lost all m cooliant while driving i was no more than a quarter mile from my house so I saw the temp going up but figuered it wasnt that bad (210) so kept going when I got home it was at about 230 not in the red section. But the Jeep stalled when I slowed down and when it was shut completly off it smoked white smoke. On my old S-10 when it smoked white smoke it was the head gasket so I put 2 and 2 together and came up with the fact i blew yet another head gasket. I already used the blocks to stop the cooliant leakin from the radiator which worked very well. So now im off to buy a new gasket and try to tackel this job sometime soon. I dont think that the head would be warped or cracked because it the temp was not at 260 which is the end of the gauge and it wasnt in the red either so hopefully its just a gasket and I can get back to driving it soon. Thanks for the help though...I appreciate it all

It smoked white smoke from WHERE?

You said it wasn't running... so where was the smoke coming from?

Have you tried putting a new hose on, filling it up and running it? If there isn't any water in the oil, and doesn't blow white smoke from the exhaust while running, yer head gasket is probably fine.

I havent touched the jeep since it happened on thursday, I was gone and just got back last night so I havent even touched it...It smoked from the engine not the exaust though. I am going to replace the hose fill it up and se how it runs. It was running when it smoked but then stalled out and still smoked because im guessing the engie was hot. Did not smoke for long tho.
Thanks alot tho to everyone iits been really helpful

So it was steaming... yeah I'd replace the hose, fill 'er up. Run it for a little bit, then shut her down and check the oil... and watch the tailpipe while she's running for white SMOKE not steam.

If the oil checks out and she's not blowing actual white smoke, run her till she's good and warm like normal running temps, then check the oil again.

I'd imagine the gasket is fine.

Now if someone could explain to ME where my water is going, I'll be happy!!!

Thanks a lot man, Now I have something to do tommorow!!!  Ill do all that and let you know the out come of what happened. Thanks again for all of your help

So, I have been working on the jeep this morning, one of the hoses was way to long and was kinked so no cooliant could really get through. i replaced the hose, and filled her up. So I ran her and she ran fine for about 3-5 min. Checked the cooliant level and the oil and it was all fine. No white smoke came out of the exahust the temp was at 100 and everything seemed to be going good. I moved the jeep from the side of my house to my drive way aobut 60 feet. I let her fun for 10 min and she was still fine after about 10 min i looked at the temp gauge and it was now under 210 and appered to be slowly creepying higher but still no white smoke from the engie or the exhaust.....WHAT DO I DO NOW!!???? lol...the cooliant level and oil is still fine.

You can test your thermostat if you want...

Take it out and put it into a pot of water
Get a cooking temp gage and put it into the water
Bring water to a boil and watch gage
when it comes up to 190 195 the thermostat should visibly open

or for a few bucks just go get a new one.

well i filled the cooliant all the way up and there is no leakage or any sign of losing cooliant. I drove the jeep about a mile and a a half. And when I got to my destination the temp gauge was just over 210 and So i got out of the jeep and the engine nor the tailpipe was smoking at all. So I turned the jeep off and poped the hood, then i listended and saw that my resivour tank was bubbling because it was so hot.

You may not have gotten all the air out. 90 and earlier had difficult coolant systems. Getting the air out is not easy. One way of filling the engine and radiator is to pull the upper radiator hose off the engine and fill down the hose through the radiator.

If you pull the thermostat and replace, drill a small ~1/8" or smaller hole in it so air can purge out easier. Makes it a hell of a lot easier to put coolant in when you don't have to wait for the thermostat to open.

Just keeping the expansion tank full will not always get the air out. I ran a 90 for years and it was a pain no matter what way you did it.

beaker  im glad you can trust a sn for a good source of  info( massxj should say masshole).  anywho. i was thinking  maybe there is a crack in the bottle which would not let the system get up to proper presure
