I've just been informed by the dealer that I don't nead a head gasket I need an engine and it will cost $3952 + Tax.

It has a cracked head and they could replace just that but there is a really good chance that the rest of the engine will break a few weeks down the road.

I'm in shock and not really even sure what advice to ask for here.

Its a '98 SE. Do I try to replace it myself? I suppose I could with help.

replace the whole thing. I cant afford a new one and another used one will just have other problems.

Thanks. I'm still in shock here.
anyone have any idea how long it would take to replace an engine?

TJ?

honestly as All the wiring is there, you could do it in a day easily.

I put the 4.0 in my jeep in a few hours. I did this in a gravel driveway with only hand tools. and an engine hoist.

Take the grill off and it becomes very easy.

THAT BLOWS! :(

Definately go USED! The best bang for the buck. Jeepinmax and I put a 4.0 in his YJ two years ago, and it is running GREAT! :D

call smiths and see if they have any low mile used. its not that hard of a job. speciallly if you go used, less to swap. just go to a repuitable yard

Smiths?

Great people there. Like Ron said, mention CCFW.

As Kakirubi mentioned - we installed a used 4.0L into my YJ. It cost $700 for the used engine (80K milage). It started right up (after I figured out the wiring). 7K miles later - it still runs great! Keep in mind- my swap was a MPI 4.0L into a carberated 4.2L lots of wiring and fuel issues. If Smith's has an engine from a similar year TJ - it will be an easy 1 day swap.

So if I can find an engine, and provide food and beer, think I can get some help?

I'd have to find somepace to do it too. Townhouse association won't let me here.

i could offer my place to do it. The next month for me is kind of busy but I am sure we could work something out if you cant find another location

Sweet. Thanks.

I'm also thinking of just changing out the head. Even if I end up having to replace the whole engine later I should be in a better place to do it since I'll have been able to plan for it at that point.

that is another option, do the head now. IF the block gives up later you could buy just a short block, because you will already have a good new head on it

-Paul

OK so I am looking at $299 (+ $100 core charge) for the cylender head and $57 for the gasket kit and $18 for new bolts.

I'm thinking change the head and flush out the oil twice.

Hows that sound?

It would suck to have to dig into the engine twice. and if the lower goes, there is a good chance you will ruin your new head.

I would just go ahead and find a used engine and swap it in. Just a one day job and it may only cost a few dollars more.

Just my $.02 :)

So is it easier to swap out the whole engine rather than the head?

A-rite has one with 84K on it for $800.
