No crank

I’ll give you guys this for suggestions while I play around with it.

2 days ago I went to move the Jeep in our driveway and when I turned the key got no crank and no noticeable click or other sounds.  Repeatedly cycled the key and probably the third or 4th cycle it cranked normally and started.  After that it started a couple of times repeatedly.

This morning before trying it I put the battery load tester on it.  It read on the lower end of acceptable, but still in the green.  Last weekend I drove it to go look at the $1500 Jeep, so that was a solid hour each way, so it should be charged.  I tried again and got the same no crank.  Only tried once.  Then hit the starter with a mallet. Cranked after that.  Looks like I replaced the starter roughly 3 years ago based on posts on here and that it looks like a reman not original one under there.  Should have kept better records cause it probably has a lifetime warranty.

Once it started today it repeatedly started 4 times after no issues.

Battery is on the charger right now.  Later I’ll do the usual connections and grounds cleaning.  And check the voltage. Seems to be charging while running.

Kinda leaning toward solenoid on starter may be getting lazy.

Open to other suggestions while I start to look.

I agree with starter; keep it simple.  With that being said, I had similar experience years ago with the crank position sensor being bad; not pointing to it, adding it to the potential list of things  :rotflmao:

Kate had a similar issue on her Hyundai. It ended up being corrosion on the hot wire on the starter. Cleaning connections fixed the issue.

Thanks guys.  I gave it another try with help this morning hoping it would fail to start so I could have the helper hold the key while I wacked the starter.  Of course it turned over first try.

I’ll get the connections cleaned up.  So far it’s only done ot after sitting for a day or so, so I’ll let it sit until tomorrow.

Meanwhile. I figured out that based on posts, I changed the starter July of 2021.  I have a credit card charge of $148 at Autozone that month which sounds like it’s probably a starter.  Can’t find a receipt, but I’ll see if Autozone can look it up. Probably a long shot but I need to go to a parts store today anyway.  If so, and I can swap it out for a new one I’ll do that in the next few days.

Keep it even simpler; clean up the grounds on the starter to begin the adventure

I’ll check all that stuff tomorrow.  Had fun yesterday speculating while I was unable to get back to it.  Today is front brakes and alternator on Volvo, so right now it sits for another day in the rain. Meanwhile the car and I will go to my Patent’s house where I can use their dry garage.

Not yet.  With the couple of days of rain the Jeep was sitting in a puddle in our driveway for a few days so I decided to wait until it dried up.  Hoping to get to it tomorrow.

Cleaned up connections this morning.  It started first time.  It only failed to start after sitting cold over night, so I’ll keep starting it in the mornings and see if the issue is gone.  If I get another failure to start I’ll move on to the next steps.

3 days of successful starting in a row.  Connections looked pretty good except for possibly the spade connector off the starter. That one was hard to see if it looked clean or not.
