Will a '90 YJ 4.2L Xcase bolt up to a '92 YJ AX15 tranny? I'm considering doing a SYE to a 231 case and bolting it on my '90YJ with a '92 4.0. I plan on swapping in a '92 AX15 eventually-but not right now. Thanks for the input!

Swap the input shaft while your in there.

...or better yet, I bought my t-case (NP231HD) from JB Conversions a few years ago for just under $1100.00 shipped. It uses all new stuff and is out of a 1/2 ton Dodge pickup, which means: HD 32 spline fixed output, six gear planetary (stock Jeep has 3), HD drive chain @1.5" (stock Jeep is 1"), and your choice of input spline. I chose the factory Jeep 23 spline (which you need).

My T-case has performed flawlessly. Check them out. For a few hundred more, you get much more t-case AND you don't have to do the work. You buy it and install it. Done.

You could get this t-case out of a Dodge Dakota. I know my dads 1995 has one. $1100 sounds like a lot to spend on a tcase when you could buy an SYE for $169ish. If you want to spend that much probably be better off doing a flip kit and a dana 300.

As far as the bolting up, like detour said just check the spline count, and if it is not correct it is not that hard to change.

You could get a used boneyard case. But I'm not sure the Dakota tcase is even the same as the Ram 231 (I doubt they use the same internals). Plus, it's still used and still needs a fixed output. My NP231HD was just under a grand ($975+about 100 bucks shipping) and it's brand new with the best of everything. Plus, no messing with installing SYE kits into a 15 year old case that could probably use a full rebuild.

You could do a flip kit D300, but you still have to find one, have it rebuilt, and then mess with it to get it in. You would need custom driveshafts and you might as well upgrade the output shaft housing.

Anyway, this is probably more than the kid wanted to hear, but for what you get and the ease of installation, $975 is chump change for a brand new unit built by the best there is.

But...
If you're set on going cheapie, pull the 23 spline mainshaft and stick it in the 21 spline t-case.

So if I canibalize my '98 Dakota  - I can swap the Xcase into my YJ? Maybe I should be looking in the junkyards for a Dakota as a doner...Does anyone know the spline count of the '90 YJ 4.2? :?:

Well the saga continues- My current NV231 T-Case mounted to an AX15 is a "J". So I think it's a 23 spline input. Today I purchased a NV231 AMC T-Case with a 23 spline input shaft (came off a TF999). It came installed with a Precision Off Road center HD SYE kit installed and a CV style yoke (http://www.performanceoffroadcenter.com/oscommerce/product_info.php?cPath=37_42&products_id=153)
$250 - I think it was a decent deal.
I just checked my Advanced adapter catalog and it mentions the NV231 23 spline input came in two styles - one for a transmission that the output shaft is flush with the end of the transmission (TF999). And one that protrudes 1/2" (AX15). Sooooo... I guess I need to swap input gears on the new case? Is that easy or do I need to completely dis-assemble the case?

If so - does anyone know of a good shop to do the work? I've never delved into a t-case or tranny before.

Thanks again for the input (no pun intended)

It may still work.. try mocking it up. another thing to do is a clocking ring( it will space the case off a little bit further and allow it work. probably cheaper and easier to do it. I was thinking about making a run of these as I need one for my dana 300 swap.

Like Jon said you could probably get away with putting a clocking ring in, Usually abour $100 or so if you buy one. They are used a lot of times when going from an ax-15 to a Dana300 t-case for the same reason you stated above.

Bull - it was the one on NEOW. Took a 6 hr round trip drive yesterday to NH to pick it up. I guess I'm looking for one of those clocking rings or just a 1/2 spacer.

Hmm maybe I can make one out of 1/2" plate

Personally i don't like the idea of spacers but the stock 231 clock is kinda nice.
