nv231 t-case

after a 100 mile run my nv231 with a sye ( around 3000 miles with the sye) started to make a high pitch noise. it got worse when pulled it into high range. the t-case was to hot to touch. fluid was full and clean. i removed the rear drive shaft, put the trans in neutral and turned the out put yoke by hand. it made a loud squeak. not like a rodent would make! but loud enough that you cant pin point the source. the t-case, th350 adapter bearing or even the th350. is a hot t-case normal? need feed back... thanks al

It sounds like it's running too hot. I believe there is a little pump that pumps fluid up in the t-case. If it broke then even with sufficient fluid, it would still have problems.

i have never seen one of these pumps. but I know that the hydraulic pumps on the tractors I work on are imfamous for getting cracks in the pick up tubes and sucking air. something else to check out.

i remember pump and pick up tube you're talking about. when i installed the sye kit (who reads directions?) i couldn't install the pick up tube after the outter case was installed, then try to install the pump. as the 90 degree bend in the tube is against the bottom of the case and is to long an stiff (don't laugh) to bend into the hole under the pump. another thing that comes to mind is i may have over torqued the out put yoke, putting added stress on the bearing inner race. thanks for all the input. a tear down and trouble shoot is next. al

ok. the full set up is a 350 sb- turbo 350 auto- nv231 tcase- dana 44 front and rear- spring over- 1.5 inch lift- high steer- 35 inch tires- 3:73 gears- locker in front- posi in the rear and a detour superwinch the massive epi 9.0.

Hate to say it, but if the internal pump wasn't supplying oil to the brearings, they are cooked and that's what you hear whining.

Is there a way to tell if the pickup pump is working correctly?

Huh,,,, I have not heard of any test... and I really could not think of how someone could do one...

Installing the pickup is the really only hard part.... but after you get the pump in, and the tube is attached correctly, you can look through the opening to be sure it stays in... once it is in, it should not be able to go anywhere because it will bottom out on the case.

The biggest complaint I hear is the o-ring seal that locks it in sometimes falls out, and then people don't realize.. then the problems start...

We all know it is a pain the hold the pump in place, with the pickup on the other side, while trying to lower the top half of the case onto the lower, and line up the shafts..... ( i said shaft )  but just being sure to take your time and double check everything will ensure you get it right....

yea it won't squeek :rotflmao:

no best bet is to pull it apart and find what is wrong

I talked to Chris Smith JR, (Smith's Jeep). Sounds like it's the t-case bearing to the front shaft. I have parts in hand.  and gonna tear into it this week. :buttrockxtreme: I'm finely back on dayshift.

Well I did a full tear down. Realy didn't see a much wrong. The pick up tube was in tight and the screen was clean. A little metal flake suspended in the oil. Replaced the front output bearings and seal. Replaced the main input bearing. Changed the front yoke to a u-bolt style. Road and off road tested fine. No more grinding noises. There's a lot of cool stuff in a t-case. Had to take it apart a few times because there was parts left over. Not good. The true test (hahahaha) is how long it'll last...
