Oil Pressure

On the ride home last night,  and this morning.  My oil pressure gauge has been acting funny.
It's not running as high as it normaly does,  and when I change speed it will up and down with the speed.  (and I'm only talked about going from 70mph to 65mph)

After its  warmed up,  when I stop at a stop light,  it will falls lower then normal as well.

I checked the oil level,  it looks fine.    I just changed it about 1500 miles ago.

Got under the jeep last night,  and didn't notice any leaks.

Just curious on what it could be??  It's got me a little worried.

I wounder if all that mud/water yesterday screwed up the sending unit?

Rob - whwn you checked your oil - was it milky?  Maybe you got some water in there.  Probably the sending unit though...

No milky oil,  thankfully. :popez:

I was thinking sending unit.  Justed because of the way the needle is dancing on the gauge.

i know its the  sender or wire or gauge or somthing  it went from good to  way high when i rre placed the sender im just to damn lazy to do it again. if  im real off camber it will drop down

we need spell chex

He's got a point - I miss the spell chex too! (wasn't that a breakfast commercial back in the '80s?)
Seriously - what happened to the spell check feature we used to have? (i'm a two finger typer and make mistakes often )

Any-hooot.  Back on topic.  What ever it is,  it is now leaking.  Noticed a small puddle forming under it when I walked out for lunch.
Looks to be coming from the back.  I'm thinking rear-main.

Don't jump on the rear main just yet. Plenty of oil leaks end up coming down the back of the motor simply due to air whipping it around and it collects on the bellhousing and drips down.

Could be still dripping swamp mud :grinyes:

A rear main seal on a newer TJ probably isn't the problem.

one of the things that are mis-diagnosed as RMS leak are valve cover leak at the rear of the cover - it drips down in the same place.

We have a winner.....  RMS.

Took it to the garage this morning.  It's leaking from the RMS and pan.

My oil pressure does the following:

Start vehicle in morning or after work (Sitting 8 hours)  Pressure is usually around 40

Get about half way to work/home pressure is usually around 20

By the time I get home it's around 12 - 13  And frequently drops to 0 at stops, and comes back to 12 or 13 when rpms increase.

Could that be the pump failing?  or a sensor issue?

If it's a nice cold day it'll never hit 0 even at stops.
.

Jeff,  that could be the pump.

That is what was happening to the Jeep my brother was going to buy.
They tried the sending unit first and then the pump.

They eventually replaced the engine.

My new sensor reads 40 while running and around 25 while stopped,  just for a base line.

I'd say you're starting to get just a bit too much clearance between the main bearing and crankshaft, BUT.......

You have a 2000 TJ ? little soon for that I'd say.

I'd verify with a mechanical gauge first and decide from there, cold and hot test.
Try using 10W40 oil as well thats what I always used.

And the pump lives in the oil pan, might as well do the RMS while you're in there.
