NEJEEP 12/16/05
Outline for contacting property owners for the purpose of gaining access to private property.
There are two ways to search. Searching for a known street address and “cold†searching larger tracts of land.
Searching for a known street address:
Start with a road map or topo map.
Bring a compass and get your bearings.
Know what town you are in.
Go to the town hall for that town.
Find the assessor office.
There should be a large tax map book.
The 1st page will show the entire town broken up into different sections.
Find the area you are looking for and that will give you a page number.
Go to that page for a more detailed map of that area.
On that page locate the parcel you are looking for.
Each parcel will have a number and will also give the acreage.
Write down the parcel number and look up the number in the index card file.
The index card will have the owners name and address as well as the lien holders.
You can also “cold†search for large parcels by phyiscly looking through the tax records for
large unbroken tracts of land and then contacting the owners.
I need some help here to draft some guide lines for contacting land owners.
It should defiantly contain CT statute Sec.52-557g Stating owner of land available to public recreation not liable etc. and the fact that we carry our own liability insurance.
Also how NEJEEP can improve the property by cleaning it up, posting no trespassing/hunting signs, control erosion and install a gate if required.
What’s everyone think? Add anything? Take anything out? This is just a rough outline to start with.
