First, about the lift, am I safe to lift my YJ 2 or 3 inches without changing much of anything else? I am going to do shocks after Christmas and maybe a set of swaybar disconnects. But I am just wondering if I am going to have to change driveshaft angle or anything.

Now, how do I know which rearend I have in my Jeep and what ratio. The label is gone off the rear so I can't even find it that way. I have a open differential and I wanted to put a locker in. It is a 1992 Wrangler YJ with 4.0L and 5 speed tranny, 4 wheel drive.

92 Yj should be a dana 35. cover should look pretty much round.

if the tag is gone off your front axle. your can check the gear ratio by jacking up one rear tire. spin the tire and count how many times your driveshaft rotates.

6cyl witht eh 5 spd will most likely be 3.07 gears.

Exactly,

the YJ only came with the Dana 35 for all its years, unless is was from Canada or Egypt, then it could have a Dana 44 (very Very rare)

If it is a 4cyl, they often have 4.11 gears but as Jon said, most 5 spd 6 cyl had 3.07

If you are going up to a 31" tire, which is what you will be able to fit with a 2" lift. (unless you cut sheet metal) then even the 3.07 will get you by just fine. You may notice a loss of 5th gear on hills. As the dana 30/35 can handle 31" and 33" NP....

I have a one inch transfercase drop kit left over from my Rusty's 4.5" lift. (basic 1" aluminum spacers and longer bolts). You can have them if you get vibrations and need them. Let me know
