Hey,
I have a 1997 Jeep TJ with a manual transmission and I have noticed a rattle coming from the shifter area. The only way I can describe it is basically going 60-65mph in 5th gear and while still keeping the truck in gear pushing the shifter around there is a "raspy rattle". Any ideas what this could be. I have noticed it more and more. Yesterday I was driving 65mph in 5th and there was this constantly without touching the shifter at all. I can move it around a little bit and it would go away a little bit but not completely. Thanks for you help. I know this might be a very random question. Thanks

6 cyl.
83000 miles
No Lift (ugh!!!!)
30x9.5 - 15 Wrangler GS-A's (another ugh!!!)
No Re-Gear that I know of.
I can feel it in the shifter-shaft and a little on the floor but not much at all.
When I am going about 65 in 5th I hear it. I can also hear it when the engine is under stress sounds almost the same.

One random thing that my friend and I noticed was that the speedo is off about 3-5 miles per hour at 40+mph almost like there were 33's on it. We also noticed that when I am going 65mph in 5th gear my rpms are at 1750ish. Could this have something to do with it.

WHAT RATTLE? :rotflmao:
Tried that for a couple of months then I decided that I should probably fix it lol.

This answer might sound crazy but I had something like this in 3rd gear at 3500. In my case I came to find that the nut under the shift knob cap was loose and rattled inside the knob. It made a ton of noise.

Thank you...I'll give that a shot and see what I come up with...Thanks again

Also touch the t-case handle, see if there is any change in noise there.  And just for shit and giggles, I would change the tranny fluid/ and dont forget the T-case.  and axles...  all good idea... :rotflmao:

Also, as for the speedo off... yeah most TJ's are.  With a GPS in a new Rubicon, I am exactly 3 mph off.  So when it goes to 33 it will be perfect.

If you need a wrench fest, let us know...

Well here is the ruling so far. I have good news and alright / slightly bad news. Good news first I changed the tranny fluid already (6 days ago to be exact). "Bad news" is that when I drained the old stuff it was watery and slightly muddy not so good sign.

Thanks for the tip on touching the transfer case handle...my friend actually had a problem idling at lights and it would rattle so I second-handedly tried that...No difference

Now I don't want to sound like an idiot but where in the world are the tranny mounts. I found the motor mounts no problem but where the heck are the other ones? Any suggestions as to what to check for specifically with TJ's??? Thanks again you folks have been a HUGE help for me!!!

I believe the transmission mount is between the transfer case skid plate and the tranny/t-case.  It tends to go bad...

Well it's not the transmission mount looks like I'm out of luck. My friend and I think it is something inside the tranny that isn't to happy possibly a bearing or something because it only really happens under tourque. We tried getting it to rattle in the driveway and not a single peep out of it. It's the worst it 5th gear so if anyone has any other ideas feel free to throw them at me I'll try anything. You folks have done this longer than me....Thanks all for replying!

well, that is the best I got unless I drive it and listen.

But unless it is real bad, I say run it.  My 03 Rubi is noise as hell in the tranny,(even though a diff tranny) and I can sometimes hear a bearing howl in 5th gear...  however my dealer says it is fine... :mad02:

Anyway, that is a pretty common tranny and if you have sever problems, it is a quick easy change...

what fluid did you use for the 15

Where are you located?

If you're anywhere near me, I'll at least listen to it and give it a quick diagnosis for free

Ok, Thanks guys. I used 75w90 (what it said in the stock manual). I guess I gotta go on the "Once it breaks then it's time to upgrade" motto....which I can def. live with lol
