Well another problem with the XJ...I was driving home doing about 40-45 and my jeep made a grinding noise from my rear end...I got out and lookedd and it looke as though the rear main seal broke...It was leaking gear oil out...Any one have any input. I was told its like 8 dollars for a new one but its going to be a pain in the :cheeky: to install it since I have to drop the whole rear end. Let me know what you :2cents: thanks

If you heard grinding noise, there might be something else going on inside. I would pull the rear differential cover and take a quick peek inside. Look for metal chunks. If you need rear end work done, I highly recommend http://ctaxleservice.com

X2 what Steve said.

If it does turn out to only be the seal (Doubtful), you DO NOT need to drop the whole rear end... just pull the drive shaft and you can do the work right there under the jeep. With your lift you probably won't even need to jack it up.

Bob, was gear oil leaking from the pinion? Grinding could only mean destruction! Pull the cover and take a look. Also check the pinion and see if there is any side to side play in it.

MUD KILLS!

Maybe he should get a Ford Escort and then he will be forced to stay out of the mud..And save some money that HE does not have....Love Bob's Dad

umm there hadent been any mud on the jeep for a week now...power washed the hole jeep for a hr last week and a hr on sunday...dont think mud had much to do with it

It's the mud WHILE your driving through it and over time that kills ya, not the mud you wash off 3 weeks later. The damage has already been done by then...

Believe it or not, Mud puts alot more strain on your drivetrain than does going over rocks and regular trail riding.

Rocks Rule! :yup:

no my dads not being a very nice man...he took it too a mechanic and now is going to donate it as a tax right off...so make this man with no common sense change his mind...i dont want to lose my jeepyyyy

Ouch  After all the time NEJeepers spent working in your XJ on your wrenchfest and all the new parts we installed  That labor alone is more than the tax wright off

Erich - seriously - there is a lot already invested in the XJ... (we all invested time and effort into it) It would be wrong (and a $$ loss) to donate it.

I understand he needs a daily driver. And this current problem may be a set back. If he needs a vehicle to get to and from work - PM me - I have a loaner  - if it's a short commute - he can use my truck

If it's a dana 35 with 3.55 gears I am trying to get rid of one. I want it gone!!!!!

A 12 pack and it's yours. By the way it's not a big job to put it in.

Go to jonfund also, an '89 is getting ready to be chopped up and recycled, by brian schoonmacher. Looks like a 8.25, but hey get it to drive, regear later if need be. Bull.

thanks for the help frank...
Bernie ill work on that 12 pack for you
