rear axle

Hello Guys
I was thinking about what I want to do for a rear axle for my cherokee.

I have a variety of axles to choose from.  However I was thinking of cutting the axle tube ends off and getting an adapter machined up to mount a front axle spindle from a dana 44 front end onto the rear.

That way I can have full floaters on a light weight axle.  Four wheel discs too. (same four all the way around)  Moser engineering can make axle shafts on both ends splined for ~$330.

I know warn makes one but it uses the original flange which I don't think is strong enough.  That and it's expensive.

What do you guys think?  Does anybody know a machine shop that can do custom machining for reasonable money.  I can supply full prints.  Hell, If they have cnc I can supply a computer model.

Jumpin Jesus H Christ, just put it together and wheel the dang thing. :mad02:

sounds good, but alot of paper work and searching for the parts and somebody to do the work, i would pick up a dana 44 from machzee (under the cheap cherokee parts section) and then just convert to disc..... just me, but it seems easier.

And it's on sale now!

Do a 31 spline 9" on the cheap, Or if it has to be full floater, just buy a C&C 14 bolt for a hundred bucks, shave the bottom, and burn a set of $10.00 perches on, and you're done. The added weight that low to the ground can only help you with your center of gravity.

60 do a 60 never want more                      hehehehehheheh

I've looked at dana 60's and 14 bolts.  Way too heavy.  I like to keep my truck as light as possible.  Also without 35's my ground  clearance will suck with either of those axles.  That dana 44 is interesting but I have no truck at the moment so I can't buy anything.  I'm not putting a dana 44 in the back of my buick.  My cherokee rear axle is pissing gear oil currently.

When I can line up a pickup I'll take a look at it.  I'm hoping friday or later to have one lined up.

Remember when it comes to weight.  Something will give, may it be suspension mounts, parts etc.  When there is a lot of weight being thrown around something will give.

WEIGHT  I hate that answer the axle holds the vehicle not the other way around. 1.875 clearance differance with the 60 just ram your way throught it LOL    Anyhow good luck with your problem hope you find your soloution every1 had there own needs i respect that totaly

I have done just that, cut the axle tube at the rear bearing boss, turn a adapter bung, weld to the tube. Use front spindles and rorors. Done. don't let all the supposed builders sway you this setup will take 500 hp thru it.

i made the adapters myself, welded the adapters on the tube ( I'm poor I only have TIG not MIG) used ARP 3/8 inch studs to attach the spindle to the adapter.( you can use my Engine lathe and make your own) Currie/Strange was the only folks who could make a blank and spline a 38 and 1/2 inch long axle. I have a BW 1339 QT.

Very nice

Looks good.  I'm going with a ford 9" rear because I found a pretty good deal on one however I'm thinking of doing the front spindles because of the four wheel discs, full float and part commonality with the front axle.

Now I need some more parts, but that's a future project at this time.

no offense but 500 hp thru a dana 44?what are you running 31's?
