Refresh on my old YJ

Well the t case was in 2HI so it wasn’t a simple fix… time to pull the t case out and rip it apart.

Well we ripped the t case apart tonight and we discovered a couple potential issues. Mostly just found out I needed to do a bolt check. My speedo gear was stripped in the t case. Pulled that out and reinstalled the case but it didn’t fix the noise. Turns out the noise is actually coming from that Currie 9”… gonna be busy for the next few days so I’ll rip into it next week. Was hoping I’d get to drive it this weekend but it doesn’t look like that’s gonna happen.

Pulled the center section out at lunch. What I discovered is the worst worn set of gears I’ve ever seen. Backlash in the gears must be 1/4”. It’s supposed to be 0.006-0.010”… pinion teeth are worn to a point. Tons of metal in the diff. Looks like I’ll be ordering parts to rebuild this axle.

I think I’m gonna blame the mirrors for this failure.

Pinion teeth are worn to a point. Tonnns of metal in the diff. Did learn it’s a posi, and the disks are actually in good shape. Just filthy. Ordered all new bearings and seals and a new 4.10 gear set. Hopefully it shows up sometime next week. In the mean time, maybe I’ll paint these damn mirrors [emoji1787]

You can keep the pinion to chop vegetables.  Or as a meat grinder.  Aren't the edges supposed to be squarish?

Yes, it is supposed to have a square edge. I’ll take a picture of the new and old gears next to each other when they come in. That should make it pretty obvious.

Cleaned the housing out last night. Damn was that a lot of shaved metal. I’m assuming the bearings aren’t all way worse only because of the giant magnet right in the bottom of the housing that seems to have collected most of the metal.
