Refresh on my old YJ

It’s alive!! It also just blew a radiator hose haha. Must not have had the clamp tight enough. Once it cools off I’ll put the hose back in and fill the radiator back up with water.

The new gears and bearings didn’t show up until about 4:30… I was very impatiently waiting for the UPS man to show up. I had it all done sitting on the ground with a driveshaft by 6:15 or so. Definitely appreciate the design of a ford 9”. This thing is a breeze to regear!!

Alright so basic mechanic question for all of you. Jeep is running and driving. Once it warms up, the Jeep likes to stall when I pull up to a stop sign. It just doesn’t catch itself when I push the clutch in. I pulled the IAC first and cleaned it. It helped a little, but was not the issue. MAF is plugged in and has vacuum to it. I’m gonna check the condition of the plugs tomorrow. Anything else I should check out?

Thanks!

The MAP could be bad. Had that with my YJ.
Now that I think about it that’s how Jarrett’s ran when his vacuum like wasn’t plugged into the MAP sensor. I’ll look up how to test it and see if I have spares in my collection of parts.

Yeah it would technically be a MAP since it’s just a vacuum like to the intake. I swapped Jarrett’s in and it didn’t seem to make any difference.

So the MAP sensor tested good. The spark plugs were shot the the number 1 wire was junk. Did a tune up. Found another IAC in the attic and swapped that on. All of these things helped the situation, but none of them fixed it. Regardless I put about 50 miles on it today and other than the idling issue when slowing down it’s doing very well. Valve cover leaks. I have one noise to chase down under the floor. It badly needs a tail pipe. I’m having a blast with it.

Thanks guys. I put a bunch more miles on the Jeep today. When it isn’t trying to die… it’s running really well! I determined that my belt was riding on a bolt. Fixed that. My radiator fan was spinning the wrong way. Got it swapped to a different fan. And I determined that I don’t have any vacuum leaks. I got access to an OBD1 scanner that might let me take some readings and help determine what’s going on.

My father came down today and hung out. He is the one who built this Jeep with me in 2011-2012, so it was really fun to get to work on it together again.

I've been looking at late 60's CJ5s.  Good price point, easy to work on...

We will see........  I got clearance from the Mrs to get a trail rig.....

Better get one then.

I think everyone should have an old Jeep. Certainly easy to work on. Unfortunately it’s old, so you’ll probably have to work on it somewhat often lol.

Impressive r&p wear. Have you replaced the coolant temp sensor yet? Does it have an O2 sensor?

I did swap out the temp sensor. I had a spare in my bucket of parts. It does appear to be working per my multimeter and some hot water. It’s common for the gauge to quit working due to a bad connection at the ribbon connector. I have to pull the center section of the dash clean the connections up.

This does have an O2 sensor. When I get back from vacation next week I’m going to look into the O2 sensor as well as the TPS.
