4.56 seems a small step when re-gearing.  Especially when you can get factory 4:10 gears (from a 4cyl  cherokee) though the rear axle would be tricky to mount.  What size tires do you have?

If you want instructions, the middletown library has the nice garage type service manuals on microfiche and charges .10 per page to make copies.  You can get the the complete instructions on how to change gears through it.

Unless you have experience, gears are not something you want to do at home. If they are set wrong you will be forced to buy all new and do it again.. suggest doing it once and doing it right. This is only if you or your friends don't or havent done it before. It is complicated.

As for doing them wrong, get the proper instructions and work to them.

Depends on your definition of complicated.  The instructions are about three pages.  The tools are not that cheap and are quite specialized.  Read up and determine if it's something you are willing to do.  It looks simpler than some other jobs I've done like rebuilding an engine, transfercase or tranny.

Plus it takes some time to do them, what's your time worth.

There is a risk of setting them up improperly.  Just like any repair.  A poorly done fuel line can torch your car.  A nicked timing belt can toast your pistons and head (non-jeep).  Screwing up a brake job can do a lot of damage too.  Improperly installed lift kits can cause loss of control and totaling the truck.

I'd send them to Pete if it was my daily driver.  It needs to be reliable.

I plan on doing them myself on my jeep though.  It doesn't see a lot of miles.  In the unlikely event I need to do it over, I'll do it again.

As for pissed at friends, do it yourself, or pay someone else.

If you TAKE YOUR TIME, then TAKE SOME MORE TIME.  and follow the directions, it's not a HARD job to do, just takes ALLOT of patience and attention to detail...

I'll be doing my own when the time comes, but I have the benefit of having an experiences person who will be walking me through it also...

.

does anyone know what ct axle charges to do both axles, i will have the parts. i have 31" tires now, but im going to 33's soon. as for the dana 35, thats what i have in their now, welded! the 44a i got cheap, and i already put the truss on it. its on the bench ready for gears. i was gonna have 2 of my friends help with the gears, 1 is ASE cert. and the other has been a mech for yrs. worked at freightliner, doing this stuff on big rigs. i trust them, but if ct axle has good prices, then maybe ill go that way.

i did mine  they have worked fine for almost3 years

When Pete (CT Axle Service) did my gears, he quoted $*** labor if out of the vehicle, $*** if installed in the vehicle. Great guy, gaurantees his work, I wholeheartedly recommend him.

edit: Please don't publish prices, we ask that individuals call Pete for individual price quote. Thanks -Steve

Peter just got through putting 4.88 D-30 Ft. D-44 rear and ARBs front and back.I said to pete, this is my only transportation, and I cant afford to have it tied up to long. ( I'm thinking to my self, yea two weeks)Pete told me drop it off sat-sun. I dropped my jeep off sunday morning, pete e-mailed me that same sunday night telling me just about what every part looked liked, good and bad.Pete had my jeep for only four days.My jeep was ready Wednesday night, and I drove it home the next day.The communication was Topnotch along with the work. Trust your jeep to Pete its well worth the money and the peice of mind  :yup: :grinyes:

Yep gotta agree, go with Pete he regeared my front D30. He had it done in no time at all and even found a bad u-joint in the process and replaced it. Perfect price ,perfect workmanship, perfect timing!

I've done about 200 gearsets for customers already, and I call pete for advice.  Topnotch in my book.  If i had the $ I'd have pete do mine (lazyness).

Yeh it is and after that I want to know what big jeep ended up doing its like catching half a movie. And after all these years someone has to know what the result was
