Rey's adventures in welding - transmission pan drain plug

With the tailgate welding a success, I decided to try something else. I had to drop the transmission pan on my tow rig to replace a couple of solenoids. If you have ever dropped an automatic transmission pan without a drain plug, you know what kind of a mess it makes.

So I planned on putting a drain plug in. B&M and Help! make kits where it's 2 threaded pieces that sandwich the pan, but I heard they were prone to leaking.

I put it in on the side of the pan because I didn't want the plug hanging down from the bottom. The main thing is that it allows most of the oil to drain out before you drop the pan.

So I decided to weld one in. I just bought a 1/2-20 oil drain plug, and a 1/2-20 nut. I drilled the hole in the pan, put the plug on the inside and the nut on the outside and burned it in. So far no leaks!

Any Leaks?

welding anything that contains oil is hard, its not like water where a hole can corrode closed

Looks good!!

No drips as of yet. I cleaned it up really good, so we'll see if it's seeping at all after a few days, but so far, so good.

I have a cast iron cover and I drilled and tapped a small 10-32 in the cover between a pair of ribs. I use a button head screw with a gasket to seal it. drains slowly but who cares.  beats pulling the cover.

Sorry about the thread hijack Rey!  I was thinking on the lines on how Beaker did his...  I have a thick Crane diff cover (I think 3/16" or 1/4") and plan on threading a hole similar to the fill hole and use a flush fitting threaded plug instead of welding a nut to the cover...

No worries Frank. I think its great that this gets the gears turning for some. I  was thinking in terms of a stock cover. If your have a thick aftermarket cover then Bernies threading idea is awesome.

Great idea and a job well done Ray ! Little things like that build confidence like you wake up in the middle of the night with an idea and cant wait till daylight !  FjR68
