School me on a new starting battery for my TJ

What do you guys use?  My 4 year old Odessey failed.  For a while it would run down dead if I didn’t drive my Jeep for a week or two (probably a parasitic draw), but in the past week it suddenly has no voltage when I started – no lights gauges, nothing.  So I assumed bad connections, wiggled & tightened the cables – all was good.  Today same thing happened and when I checked – the positive terminal turned in the case!

Anyway – looking into new batteries.  I used to be an Optima guy, had them for years in my YJ and truck, but the newer one’s quality seemed to be lacking.  I switched to a Die Hard Platinum AGM on the YJ and it was an awesome battery, stayed in the YJ until I sold it.  I had an Optima in the TJ, but I replaced it just because it was over a decade old.  Went with the Odessey.  Thinking I might try Die Hard gain – anyone have experience with them since Advanced Auto took them over from Sears?

Here's the battery I just pulled (see the positive terminal is skewed!)

I put in an old Optima I found in the barn for now.  It still had 12.4V, so I figured why not.

I have a couple Die Hard AGM's and seem OK.

Optima was bought out by Johnson Controls and they seemed to have resolved the quality issues from my research. I had one in the ZJ but is long gone.

Autozone DieHard Platinum AGM, Short bus and the Acura have them, and it's always fired up, and if not, trickle charger gets it right there!

Fify

Advanced Die Hard

I have the gold. lasted 2 years exactly. I traded it in at the end of the warranty, got another free one, good for another two years.

I'm not buying those red and yellow tops anymore. They are not the same as they use to be when they first came out.
I'd go as far as saying they suck now.

Thanks for the input guys!  Looks like the Die Hard Platinum is out of stock at Advance Auto.  I found a similar battery at O'Reilly's.  Their AGM battery is made by Deka / East Penn Mfg (750 CCA). and only $259

Autozone has Optima Red Top (800 CCA) group 34 for $279

Walmart never starts, great battery's

You guys are over paying for lead and plastic

I have to agree with him.

If you look at Manufacturers, Johnson Controls makes the majority of retail batteries out there. Yes, different levels of quality but essentially the same battery with many stickers and price points.

One thing I learned from trashing motorcycle batteries, bring the battery home and trickle charge before installing. Batteries that sit on a shelf are not charged. As soon as you arc the battery the memory is set for the life of the battery.

Interesting... All of the high end battery stuff came up when using a winch, right? I just looked up the requirements for the 12000lb HF winch, and all they say for a minimum is 12v and min 650 CCA.

Thanks for all your guidance.

I ended up with a new Optima.  Read that their quality issues are resolved on the newer units.

I'm taking Pat's suggestion and trickle charging it with an AGM charger prior to installing it
