Shark bite vs Pro Press

Doing some bathroom remodel work, bought the expansion gun for Pex A because the existing tubing running up there was feed by it, so had too. It’s been great and went highly recommended. I like it a lot better than the crimping style pex actually.

Now downstairs the old pex feed lines were shark bite in with a tee On the copper pipe, and worked and is still currently working as I cut off the supply tubing after the shut off and plan to tie in elsewhere in the basement.

Now I could buy a rigid pro press for $1200 that only does half inch and three-quarter or I can spend $800 and get the Chinese brand tool for 800 that does half-inch through 1 inch. Go into my basement and eliminate all the other shark bites that are used in the system elsewhere from previous owners at unknown times during renovations and repair valve feeding my boiler that I need to redo.

OR

I could just spend the $30 for the two shark bite teas and install them further down the line and plumb up the bathroom and move on with my life, but of course cannot do that. My brain does not work like that.

The crazy part about all this too is here. I am losing sleep over this and my neighbor down the street is having her bathroom renovated by a contractor and I stopped over the other day and I look inside and the shower valve is attached with shark bite connections that are tiled in behind the wall. Yet I’m over here like oh I don’t know if I should lol

I can 100% understand where you are coming from when it comes to overthinking things, especially plumbing.

Sharkbite fittings are great because they are an instant solution and you can always take them apart at a later date.  And, if you're careful enough, you can reuse them.  They have saved my bacon in the past.

If you can fix the problem with 2 fittings, and then re-plumb with a more 'permanent' solution if it bugs you in the future, it's a win.

Why not just buy one to see if you like it or jot?

If it was my place, I'd probably just bust out the torch and solder it.

But, for someone not comfortable with that process - the others are viable.

Personally - I still don't trust shark bite 100% and would never install a fitting that's going to be hidden in a wall or otherwise inaccessable.

In an open basement - I'd be OK with that.

For more than a couple fittings, I borrow a Milwaukee M12 prop press tool from work.  I think they rent them at certain home depots.

Pex A is proven and I'd trust that almost anywhere I'd use copper (water - NOT compressed air)

I’ve tried to solder, but it is actually an art form. I trust the shark bite more than I trust a joint I soldered lol

They would be in a basement where I could see them and I have used shark bites in the past going from pex to copper in my basement when I installed the hot water heater and they are fine. I make sure to clean up the ends all nice nice, mark the depth and install cleanly.

Always seems like it's one of those conversations where the same amount of people that tell you they're gonna fail will tell you they've had them installed issue free for years.

Soldering is easy enough so I just do that.

Got any friends in HVAC or plumbing that might let you borrow a pro press? I feel like all of them carry one now.

Shark bites other than being expensive are usually fine.  If you have water hammer issues they will walk off the pipe.  I've seen it, not just internet BS
