Shock Boots

I know most guys don't even use them, but some do. Has anyone that does not use them had any adverse effects with getting that much water and mud on their pistons?

Thinking about leaving mine off, but the new Tera shocks I got for the YJ have a really nice boot, drain holes, metal boot clamp.. etc....

Been running my DT3000's w/o boots since 2002 with no problems. It's been under water, in mud, survived snow, and salt.

I've been running the above shocks without boots for a year and a half now.

The only adverse affect I see is rusty shock pistons near the top, yeah I know I could clean it with WD-40 or something but I'm too lazy for that.

I too have to say without. Boots just retain dirt, mud, moisture, etc.

RS9000s for about 9 years now, without boots. Boots hold mud and water in, even if there are holes. You shocks come with seals to keep the mud and water out. No rust on the shaft either.

No boots.

Cjshloman's pistons are slightly rusted as well. I keep telling him that he should clean them up. use a very fine emry cloth. Nothing too coarse. If they travel down into the piston, the rust will start to damage the seals in the shock. then you get seepy shock syndrome (SSS for short) I don't have boots on mine for the debris retention factor. but I make sure I hose them off right away, even if the rest of the clean up takes a few more days. If you take care of them, (rinse and WD-40) they should last a long time. WD-40 is really the best. WD= Water Displacing. :2cents:

You can emery away on my shocks anyday man....you know where the jeep is....lol. I obviously dont have boots, see above. Hoping to get full traction kit in spring, just for some new shocks.....yeah right. Bull.

I used to think the 'boots' were eye candy for the trailer queens. That said, I put the included boots on my Pro-Comp shocks I bought 6 yrs ago. When I finally replaced them this fall, I checked out the shocks. The shafts were shiny! (and the bodies were completely rusted) And thats after many trails, dunkings and playin' in the surf on the beach. I was so impressed, I actually ripped 'em off my old shocks and put them on my new ones. Just another opinion...

Just means you need to flex them more Joe...

Tis' is true....It's been awhile since I've been out on a run with you all.
Have many repairs to do first.

When I had Skyjacker shocks with boots I also noticed the shafts were clean and no mud or anything was inside the boots, I should have re-used em' on my new shocks.

It all comes down to whether you like the way they look I guess.

The boots are there for cosmetic reasons only, use 'em if your a girlyman.
