I was fooling around in the yard today and managed to rip off one of the bolts holding on the factory skid plate. The previous owner had cross threaded one of them, so now I am down to 4 bolts holding it on. Im hoping I can get the broken bolt out, didnt have time to try today. But for the cross threaded one does anyone have any suggestions on repairing the frame to accept a bolt? I dont have a tap that large

If it's cross threaded AND snapped, you're going to have to drill it and re-tap it. IMHO Unless you can get to the inside of the frame and get a nut on it.

I have 2 damaged one is snapped, not too worried about that one, a little time and effort and it should come out, but the cross threaded one is my concern. Has anyone ran into this before? What size tap will I need to find?

For the cross threaded on, what size bolt is it?

10mm bolt holes can be tapped for 7/16 fine thread (smallest one that will still make threads in the hole)

first drill with the appropriate drill, then tap with 7/16 fine tap.

On my YJ, the OEM 1/2 bolt was stripped, so I drilled and tapped to a 9/16 bolt. Grade 5 from Napa... no problems...

What type of Jeep?

What type of Jeep are we talking about?
I've had to replace half of the nutserts on the TJ - the weld holding the insert from spinning breaks, then you are screwed.

I have a missing nut on one of my skid plate bolt locations. I was thinking about drilling it out with a 1-1/2" hole saw. Then drill out a piece of new plate the same size, drill the middle hole to accept the bolt and weld a nut to the back side. Then seal weld the assembly into the frame nut side in. Sound like too much work? Al (ctgranite) cut a window in the side of the frame, welded a nut in place and re-welded the window back in and ground it smooth. The thing is, if you dont weld, or know somebody that does, your screwed. :poundit:

yeah its a yj i would drill it and tap it but I dont have any taps that big, although that seems like my only option,

Ack can you thank craig for me, the wheels worked out great!
