Seems I snapped 3 hub bolts. I've heard this is common on 30 hubs. Was going to replace them, but the easy-out only got one out and the other 2 seem like they are going to snap the extractor.
Guess I'll swap in a used one I have and go to studs and lock nuts. Any CJ guys do this yet?

Karl,

Absolute MUST on a CJ 30 front hub. Also a good time to switch to the six bolt hub if you have the 5 bolt. I switched to 6 bolt and went to studs. This also allows you to run the Warn Premium hub instead of the standard hub. Brings the Hub up to D44 strength.

No $ching$, just going with 5 bolt studs.

I'll dig out my 5 bolt hubs. You can throw them in the rig as trail spares.

Thanks, but i've got a bunch of spares. Just need the time.

Happens all the time on the dana 30 with 33's... go with studs, get the grade 5 type and use nylon lock washers along with red locktite.. thats what I have and I still have to tighten them before each run. the stock hub is thin cast aluminum which takes all the torque from the tires and causes the studs to work loose then the hubs breaks.the warn heavy duty ones which look exactly like the stock one work nicely but the super heavy duty are supposed to be a nice upgrade with a different way distributing the torque and prevent breakage.

my thinking is.. if you up grade to the warn super duty then the weakest link is the u-joint.....carry extra hubs... easier to change than blowing a ujoint...

Throw some mil spec aerospace grade studs on and torque it down until it splits. Then back off a 1/4 turn

Not so. I snapped u-joints with the standard 5 blot hub. At enough steering angle, the stock u-joints will always be the weak link up front.
