My '94 xj i got for free doesn't runs
so me and zach went ou tand got the parts today ,between doing some geocaching and exploring old building and finding mummified animals (boy do you jump when your not expecting that ) came back to my house and started the teardown we got the first two cylinders compression tested ( cyl 2 had 30 lbs  ) got the fuel lines disconected as well as the throttle cables and in came the rain
so much for getting the head off tonight
we ill keep u updated i want it running tommorow ive got the tent and tarps ready to go

Check the valve springs on that cylinder first, they are known to go bad for some strange reason.

It's uncommon...but I've seen it happen more than once.

Running..

Turns over
Gets Spark
Gets fuel.. It has a major lose of compression out the side of the head blowing out oil.

So your chasing the head gasket.....

well we are pulling off teh head.. to check.. in order to put everything back together yes you do need to put a new gasket in do you not? I totally forgot about the spring issue that Joe mentioned.. I guess he will find out as he tears it down more.

Just remember, I have a complete 4.0 here for parts if you need any.

Free 8)

Ouch.
Like Detour said, get a whole new engine. Trying to resurect that thing is going to waste your time a perfectly good set of gaskets someone else could use.

well we decided to take the cheapest route first

turned over 3-4 times and fired right up
blew smoke like ive never seen for about 10 mins then that cleared up
changed the oil and filter compression tested her got between 130-140 on each cylinder
