I woke up one morning to find my automatic 94 xj with a chrystler 8.25 rear end making a disturbing grinding noise in deceleration. The noise is made worse by higher speeds and is also detectable while accelerating. I checked the drivetrain to the best of my abilities and found there to be play in the yolk exiting my Transfer case. about .25 to .5 inches of movement. A mechanic friend mentioned that it might be a speed output bearing???

I'm looking for insite as to what to do next? Id rather avoid briging it to a shop because i plan on selling this jeep within the next few weeks and i know that whatever is wrong will cost more than the jeep is worth to fix it. (I'm asking around $1700 for it)

Any help at all is appreciated. thanks

pat

Start off by checking all of the fluids. Make sure they're topped off, and keep track of how much you had to add if they were low. If they were very low, it could indicate where your problem is. Also check your u-joints for play, and grease them if they are serviceable.

could a lack of tcase or gear fluid really cause that much noise?

:) I just6 found a 1990 yj with 45,000 original miles on it!!!! I convinced my dad to buy it now because it would obviousely be gone quickly and he's drigving it til he gets a new car from his company. Then im giving him teh cash from selling my jeep adn i take over the wrangler....Unfortunately im goign to school in boston and cant have a car on campus for the next 5 years but at least itll be waiting for me when i get home!!!

if i can get this problem with ym xj solved it will be much easier to sell it so thanks for the help huys adn girls and keep it coming
