While we are all talking about CBs and trail commmunications does anyone have any suggestions about what kind of CB to get?

I am trying to find something that will fit where my head unit is now after I move it into the Tuffy center console

Check out the smaller Cobras.  They won't be a perfect fit, but with a little work I am sure you could make them fit nicely.

I have a couple of these

All the electronics are in the head and the electronics box is only 2"x2"  I have that mounted in the stereo section of my Tuffy console (it is also easy to mount behind the dash)  The head/mic unit/cord just unscrews and you can lock it up.

thanks guys that should get me started in the right direction, but I'm always open to suggestions

i have a connex 3300 peaked and tweaked, with talk back and echo with reverb,a wilson whip antenna. yea breaker 1-9 this heres the rubber duck, you gotta copy on me pigpen come on   pete

I know a few people here at NEJeep have the Cobra 75 WX ST.  A few people warned me before I got it, but I got it anyway.  Waist of money for me.  I am glad that it has works for a few, but for me, it crapped out in 6 months.  There is a set screw down at the bottom, that often falls out and when that happens it twists the wires inside, and can only be fixed by a good tech.  Also, it was heavy, got in the way, and when you are fumbling with it, you accidentally push the buttons.  With the top down, I held it to my head when someone would talk and it would change channels... etc.

I am on my 3 unit, and the one that has lasted the longest is the Uniden I got from Walmart on a trail ride up in North Adams.  Nice small mic that I have beat the crap out of, put an external speaker and it sounds sweat.  I always wanted a nice high end unit, but they can get $$.  But worth it.

I am actually also in the process of upgrading my cb setup. I have heard really good reviews for Uniden 68 series (68 LTW and 68 Elite). They are small in size the LTW is 6 1/4" x 2 1/8" x 8 1/4". The only thing that you may have a problem with is depth. I know that a DIN (aka radio) size is 7.2 x 2.11 inches. So the face of the radio will fit no problem.
Now for performance. The 68 series are pretty sweet. They have a decent amount of features like Weather Alert which is always good. They are just very nice performing radios with a nice clean sound. I myself am getting a 78 Elite for my '97 Wrangler. I plan on getting a Tuffy Overhead Console to house it.
One thing that is a big misconception is that the radio is the most important part. In actuallity the antenna and coax is the most important part. I have seen guys with Bargin Outlet radios with a nice antenna setup out perform guys with $400.00 Magnums and crappy antenna setups. I am a very very very big fan of Everhardt antennas they are THE BEST performing antennas and many companies like Firestik actually got there designs from Everhardt. This is my two cents.

I also have the Uniden cb in my jeep, puts out 7 watts still working  good after 15 years  :applaud:

help... I got a cobra for x-mas and I need help geting it installed... truck stop? where can I pick up an att? and what the h#ll is a swr meter? tunner......

SWR stands for 'standing wave ratio'. The SWR Meter measures this ratio and is a tool for tuning the antenna. Antennas such as Firesticks have an adjustment at the tip for this purpose.

There is a truck stop here in Southington. They have a pretty good selection of mounts, antennas, etc. A radio store like the one in Newington could help too. I think it's called Lentinis or Santinis - something like that.

The install is pretty easy. Picking your hardware, like antenna type and mounting config and antenna location - that's a personal taste thing.

If you need a hand, I can help you with it and/or I'm sure a ton of people here have experience.

you need a decent mount, you have a Wrangler or a XJ?

Then just get an antenna and have it tuned.  Lentini on the Berlin turnpike is a good place.  Just mount your CB.  Get your antenna mount on,

Like this TeraFlex one. (for a TJ)

Then go to lentini, buy an antenna from them, (they are price just as low as everyone else) and they will mount it, and tune it for free right there in the parking lot.  Took me 10 min there

Lentini Info Here http://www.lentinicomm.com/

I also went to Lentini's right after buying my jeep, and bought my antenna from them. Went home, installed it and a good quality CB. Went back there and they tuned it while I waited. No charge.

I haven't had a single problem with the setup, and it's been bounced around on the trails for quite a few years now.

Thanks I'm trying to get my stuff in order. I'll try the lintinis place.although I might be able to pick up some "trucker" lingo at the truck stop........

how about the mount? behind the driver taillight? 4 foot firestick? spring? how much coaxel. I understand that the right combo of att and wiring can make the diff... any other tips /tuning tricks would help... Its a cobra 40 ch ,walmart

Dude, I'd go to Lentinis first. The truck stop is fine for hardware and stuff, but if you aren't comfortable and knowledgeable about electronics, let experts help you. Lentinis has been around forever and they know what they're doing. They probably have the latest and greatest stuff too.

I'm soon to be in the same boat you are because right now all I have is a magnetic mount on the roof of my ZJ and I don't know where or how I'm mounting my stuff either. I don't even know what kind of bumpers I'm going to end up with yet.

Let us know how you make out.
