sputtering and (almost) stalling

I'm having this weird problem that I cant figure out.

First off, it’s a '98 TJ with a 4cyl

Weeks ago I was having a problem where it seemed to be missing and stalling slightly while I was on the highway.

It slowly seemed to get better and go away.

Tuesday I changed out my plugs, wires, cap and rotor.

Wednesday I started feeling it again.

Yesterday and today it’s gotten really bad.

I have no engine lights or anything so I don’t think it’s the O2 sensor.

My current suspects are the fuel filter and/or sending unit, control module, or intake/exhaust manifold (After I bought it the exhaust got slowly louder and I found that I was missing most of the bolts for the exhaust manifold)

Any thoughts?

Its prob the exhaust man........Mine went on my 98 and sputters and has power loss. Ill be ordering my new banks header next week. Bull.

Didn't someone here recently have a problem with a bad fuel injector causing the same issue? And he also had no "check engine light" on.

A scanner will be needed for this problem it seems.

I was thinking of going over to advance. They have scanners right?

So I'm thinking that I have a loose wire somewhere. I fidgeted with all the wires going to everything on the ignition system and the problem went away for several days. I've only gotten a few minor hiccups and they are all about a half second after hitting a bump.

So when it starts happening If I stop and start it a couple times it goes away for a while.

Did you change the fuel filter? The crapola in there could be aligning it's self enough to plug the passage, and after a few restart cycles it moves around to let the fuel through again. Change it out if you haven't yet.

Thats what I was thinking. Hadnt replaced the filter yet because I wasnt convinced that was the problem.

Thanks

The fuel filter in a 98 TJ is intregal with the whole fuel pump assembly, you don't need to change it unless the pump itself is bad which is big $$$.

I'd be looking at something else as to what the problem is. Unless the pump itself is really on it's way out.

Fuel psi. spec. is 39-41 psi. running with no leakdown after key off within 30 mins. I believe.

There's no filter above the axle like a cherokee? Interesting.

It's like that with all 96 or 97 & up Jeeps, sucks but it's the truth.
