I want to put a 4.0 in my 90 yj with a 2.5.  I believe the 4cyl in the yj now has some cylinder damage.  I'll take the head off today and find out for sure but I cant get to turn over by hand or starter!  I can rebuild the 2.5 myself but one of my friends has a cherokee with 4.0 for cheap.  The technical part is not what I'm worried about at all I know I can handle the swap.  The only question that I have is can I swap a 4cyl for a 6cyl in CT and be legal??  I want the yj to be completely legal in all aspects so if anyone has any experience with this in CT or any suggestions thank you for any help.

I'll check with the old man for you, I'm not sure but I think it is good as long as you pass emissions, however when you go the standards are set by the vin code so they will make you try to pass for a 4cyl.

as far as I know there is nothing directly against it but it may be a technicallity you need, so I'll get clarification.

BTW try not to fall of the face of the earth so much

You will have to replace the engine and all the emmisions gear from a vehicle that is a '90 or later.

The old man says there is no laws against swaps at all, but you are supposed to have DMV check the numbers so they have the correct information in their system

The last I heard was it has to be available in that chassis , the same year or newer.  So a 90 through end of production 4.0 from a cherokee or yj / tj (same engine) is acceptable.  However all emissions equipement has to be swapped (unless it's the same).  That being said.  An 87 through 90 4.0 is virtually identical so it will raise no flags to go to a 87 4.0.  The cherokee I believe has some of the front accessories in different positions.  I think it will fit but you may need some different brackets.

By the way, the engines have different bellhousings so swapping the transmission is also necessary (though it should be easy).  If the cherokee is an auto it's an AW4 which is longer than any stock tranny in a yj or TJ.  Get a hack and tap kit and shorten the T-case.

Nice.. I was actually gonna call your dad Bill.  I plan on running a cat because contrary to popular belief a cat does not restirct flow, only the openings and exits restrict flow.  Thanks!

Watch out if CT decides to go CA emissions.  There has been talk of implementing CA emissions in CT.  CA does underhood inspections.
