SYE install Saga

Last week, we installed a SYE kit in a spare transfer case (thanks Damon & Bruce!)
Well today I decided to install the SYE case into the YJ.  Removing the old one went OK.  Swapped the speedo gear into the new case and put in a new front yoke seal.

Then went to install.  Benchpressing a  T-Case up into the Jeep isn't fun.  Had all the holes lined up and couldn't get it to mate.  Struggled with it for about 45min.  Then dropped it down to double check the input shafts.  Counted the splines - stock T-Case had 23 splines and the SYE case had 21 splines    So back to the bench and swapped the SYE to my stock t-case.  Only took about 15min (Thanks to Damon's training -  now Bruce and I are SYE pros!)
We re-installed the the T-case (went in easily), hooked up the linkage and the front DS.  Everything was finally coming together!
Then, we went to install the rear shaft.  It was at least an inch or two too short  .  It would have 1.5" of spline showing to mate to the pinion yoke (at ride height).  I'm sure it would pop out at droop.  That's what I get for buying a used Tom Woods
So now I have to order a new shaft.  Hope to have it before Mayhem.
The only good news was the angles looked OK!

Sorry for the long story.  I just had to vent

:zbanghead: :zbanghead: Oh, I have those kind of problems on the CJ, daily.

Courville's Garage in Montville builds shafts. If you bring your Woods shaft to them. They remove the old shaft and reuse the ends. Short turn around. # is 860-848-1221 open M-F 7-5. Another option.

Sounds like the same luck I've been having with the xj.
You think you're ahead of the game, and a surprise problem sets you back even more.

Then to top it off, the parts suppliers don't answer emails or phone calls for a week when you need those parts before you can continue with the rest of the jobs.  :shakehead:

Tom woods will lengthen that shaft you have for very reasonable $$. After the pounding i have put on my shafts  , I wouldn't run anything but a Woody!  :rotflmao:

No problem for the help... I love doing it....

Bruce so you know, I have been through the same this last week after doing a SRS

Tom Woods charges $65 if it was purchased from them.

However shipping for my front was as follows. (tom only uses UPS)

Ground (5 business days) $27  (not enough time before MM)
3 Day $53 each way
Tom takes 2 days to do it.

And this was on last Thursday, and knowing that only leaves me 12 biz days..  barely enough time, and with any screw ups, that leaves me drive shaftless.

So for the 3 day option that I would have needed it would have been around $170

I went to Overland Driveshaft in Montville (I think it is attached to Courville's)

Will take them 3 days.  They wanted $150 unbalanced (I have hubs) and $200 balanced.  So it was worth it to me....

hope this helps

Damon, thanks again for teaching Frank and myself the ropes when it comes to front axel shafts and SYE installs!!!!

Man, when things go bad, they go really BAD!  Frank, I think getting the shaft you have locally lengthend is the way to go. :grinyes:

Exept for having to purchase a cool new DeWalt grinder, Mandy's lift went smooth.  Thanks to Damon for the SYE class.  Dad enjoyed it too.  Very minor vibes.  Sorry, I'll post elsewhere, but it did involve an SYE.  :sign_hijack:  :mad02:

I'll check with the wife about locally lengthend shafts- but otherwise -it sounds like a plan

I appreciate the feedback
Seriously, I'll check out the options

Donny - sorry I got caught up with installing my SYE- otherwise I would have been helping you with wrenching on Mandy's rig

Can I have her phone number??  :rotflmao:  :rotflmao:  :rotflmao:

Draz - you are on the wrong track.  I just have to sell her on the funding for longer D/S for the YJ   As far as the shafts - once you go JeepinMaxx - you never go back

Back on topic

Nomad and CT Granite thanks for the shaft input
I went to I went to Overland Driveshaft in Montville today.  They will lengthen my Woody to 16 3/4".  The tail-shaft U-Joint was toast.  Hopefully the CV U-Joints are OK.  He quoted $200-$250 balanced (depending on the CV U-Joints).  Worst case would be if all the U-Joints were shot
They told me that they would recommend a HD u-joint for my application - spicer sealed units

Bad news

The extended shaft won't be finished until Friday or early next week.  Cutting it pretty close to Mahem.  May be riding Shotgun :frown:

More bad news - I drove the YJ home today in FWD.  The vibes are still there at 40MPH.  The front tire burnouts were fun though (probably not good for the front axle U-Joints )

Picked the TW driveshaft up from Overland's today.  It was a little more expensive than planned - $290
The center pin which connects the CV was bad and one of the U-Joints needed replacing.  I guess thats what I get a for buying used TW (only ~$70).  Add it up and it comes out almost to what a new one costs  .  That's what I get for waiting for the last minute.  Overland did an exceptional job and finished it before the weekend for me.  After telling them the application, when lengthening it, they modified it to have equal travel in both compression and extension.  I highly recommend them.  I Installed the shaft tonight.  The pinion angle is within 2 degrees of the driveshaft.  Unfortunately - it's 2 degrees above the centerline of the driveshaft - not below.  Much less vibes than before.  I have 8 degree shims in now - probably need 5 degrees.  It will have to go to Mahem as is.

Yeah it really is a never ending battle for us leaf spring guys....

anyway, just remember that every degree you turn the pinion down, the shaft angle goes to.  So if you drop 2, you may go 3 to 4 degrees.  You can call TW and ask them, and they have a calculation to help.

Either way it is hit or miss...  I think I may have 5 degree shims here, but I would pick up 6 also, just in case.  Unless you dont need to drive it and can wait until another set come in shipping if the 5 are wrong.  Also need new center bolts, and rear axle U-bolts.  You should never re-use them unless you have to get you buy.

A good place to get shims and center bolts is Rubicon Express, they have steel ones that wont warp, weep or crack like aluminum.  As for u-bolts call up overland again, and if they are more than $50 call up superior spring in Hamden.  Also give me a ring, I have a few tricks to speed up the job... being I have changed shims 5 times, I think I may have it down, (until the next time)  :rotflmao:
