Temp gauge jumping around

This just started yesterday on my 94 YJ - 4 cyl...

The temp gauge jumps all around from the low end of 100 degrees to about 200 degrees - it will at times settle down and give what I think is an accurate reading - but only at idle... Once I step on the skinny pedal the jumping starts. Sometimes at idle or acceleration it is dead - as in it reads only 100 (the lowest point on the gauge)... Is it safe to assume that based on the above it is the sending unit, or should I be looking elsewhere. That said I have 2 more questions:

On the 94 YJ - where is the sending unit located - I have not looked yet as it was late.

Can I check the gauge by simply grounding out the connection from the sensor? If so, should it go "full hot" when I ground it?

Thanks....
