ok heres whats its doing. when i put the key in it and turn it one noch forward all the power works radio, locks and so on but when i go to trun the engine on all the power cuts out. i think i'm sorting out the battier. so i replace the negtive cable that grounds to the motor(which was in bad shape) and replace the starter but its still doing the same thing. the guys at the part store said it could be the ground for the starter but for the life of me i cant find it, the only other cable that leave the starter is a small green one and it run along the motor and splits in to two cables that go to a bunch of other connecters that i have no clue what then are for. so does any one have any idea. i dont want to take it to a shop cause i acutally like to work on motors and i want to learn how to fix things but i dont know what i'm doing so any help would be great on how to fix this.

thanks

oh its a 89 xj with a 4.0 in it

The starter grounds to the block. The Engine block then has a ground strap to either the chassis, or the battery.

Did you try the jumper cable thing i showed you to confirm the starter is working?

no i didnt have cables. i'm getting ready to leave i'll have to fix it on tuesday when i get back but thats going to be there first thing i test. does any one have that tool that can tell you if the cable is getting power to it

It's called a volt/ohm meter, and you should buy one of you don't have one yet. Very handy tool for trouble shooting.

i agree with mark, same symptoms on a few jeeps in the past, lead to be the starter relay. ITs about $15

Just make sure she's in neutral when you jump the started. Don't want to become a JEEP statistic.

You should be able to cross the terminals on the starter motor with a screwdriver if your triing to jump it, like Karl sead be double sure it's not in gear.

well i know that the starters works i just try them toyworx, doing that think that u said to do. i'm going check the ground tomorrow and if then look good then i'm just going to buy the starter relay tomorrow and give that a shot.

ok here a dumb question but is there a fuse for the start that could have blowen. and thats why its not working.

OK i got the thing to start but i had to us a screwdriver on the starter to get it to start. it has a new starter relay but it still wont start with the key.
any ideas?

Have you checked your Tire Pressure? The centrifugal force that's created when traveling at speeds over 35mph with uneven tire pressure can send an electrical current through the jeep resulting in a faulty start  ---- ok... I just made that shite up....

On a serious note... Have you checked your windshield wipers lately? The wiper speed factor when traveling at speeds in access of 65mph can send a shock wave through the jeep equaling the force of small nuclear explosion which can "at times" cause your electrical system to fail. This is easy to spot because everything around would have probably disintegrated long before you try to restart your jeep.... ok, made that up too ;)

Sorry Bud... can't help you... good-luck with the repairs...../marty

It's begining to sound like an ignition switch problem
Has the steering columb been out?

oki dont know what i did but the things is run now i mess with the cables leading off the starter. and now it runs :D

well i replaced the negtive cable off the battery which had wire exposed i'm hoping thats it cause i cant find any thing else

The wires around the starter relay can be a pain. Check each one and see if a fusible link is blown.
