TJ build start. Need some advice

Granted all this was done with a 4 cylinder jeep, and less power equals less energy to break things, and yes I did sell it once I had a family but under my own choice BRUCE lol I was in the game for over 10 years, and it had just lost the fun for me personally. I may come back and when I do, it will be in an XJ

ANYONE in this club will tell you, I beat the ever loving snot out of my jeep, put zero preventive maintenance into it and it just kept coming back for more. I clanged and banged, and wheeled my way to the top.

I started out with just budget boost and a 3 inch body lift on 33s and 4.88 gears open/open, I evenly got to 4 inch short arm lift and 35s. I ran a lunch box locker in the front and a LSD in the rear, on my last run with the jeep I finally did have a super 35 in the rear with a Detroit.

Armor up, and get a few runs in you. We offer beginner trails and runs for jeeps with little to no mods, you would be surprised what I stock jeep with a few mods can do. Make sure you like it before you get down and dirty with swapping axles.

Im not saying axles failures dont ruin the day, but you can recover from that by carring a spare, Ive seen way more driveshafts and brake lines spoil the fun and knock ya out of comish

Scratch the axle and put a CO2 air tank set up on your list. It makes setting a bead so much easier on the trail, and for airing up after the run. I always aired down really low, worked well for me. I think i have an extra one 10lb one kicking around Ill look.

You are one the right track with skid plates, When it comes the the trans, I think you already ordered it, but one that tucks the depth of the skid is nice, I had a UCF 1 inch drop, it was nice and well built. Deff get the one that covers the PS box, not being able to steer will also put you out of comish as well.

Like I said, wheel it like you have it now, see what holds you up, then go from there, but to just say you cant wheel with a d35 on 35s is absurd, I mean comeon it had "35" right in it!!!

I search CL and FB Market Place all the time. I look for defunct vehicles with stuff I'm looking for. I buy the whole thing, cut it up, take what I need, sell off what I can and junk the carcass. Three rigs gave their lives for my YJ build. It also keeps your costs down. But More Time Spent = Money and Money = less time. You choose the route you want and need to go.

Believe it or not car-part.com many times is cheaper than CL. Do your shopping there first so you know real pricing...

After 20 min looking.... FB marketplace is jumping down the rabbit hole for sure...more questions than answers lololol....found a 95 cherokee that meets everything i want for parts for the TJ lol. 95 is xj which fits tj right?

Skides will stay, start there. Oh, another thing, gas tank skid isn’t as beefy as you think. Knocked my fuel pump at Badlands leaning on the skinny pedal. Went up, came down and...

With your 1.5 inch body lift you could take advantage of a gas tank skid that tucks it up a bit further. I gained about 1.5 inches under mine. There are several different options and it pairs well with a tummy tuck.

Ok i saw teraflex had one for body lifts. Might order that one then. That would be a full set of skids then unless im missing one i dont know about, steering, trans/oil, factory xfercase, and then gas tank.

What are you looking to get from an XJ? Axles? The front axle will be a HP30 but I believe it will have the smaller u joints. Your shafts however will slide in and should have the bigger u joints.

The rear axle on that XJ will either be a d35 or a 27 spline C8.25. The 96+ C8.25 axles are 29 spline and very plentiful. You will likely have to regear to match your front axle though. And it will need coil mounts. I think you said you have a 4 cylinder? If so you should already have 4.10’s.

If you do get a Cherokee rear axle, I have a couple extra sets of 29 spline shafts. Although I don’t actually know anyone personally that has broken one with a 35” or smaller tire.

I think most people upgrade diff covers at some point too.

There are a lot of people with more experience than me but I'd advocate for taking it wheeling and seeing what your needs are while doing research and taking your time.  Plan out what kind of wheeling you want to do and where you want the Jeep to be at the end.

My plan has been to do skids first so that was basically all last year.  I did rocker guards before going out the first time and they paid for themselves that day.  That first time out I clipped my oil pan right in front of the drain plug so the next skid was the engine/transmission skid.

Each time I went out I would clean underneath well and see where I was making contact and plan around protecting that area.  Since I'm not planning a lift until next year another goal was to gain ground clearance and smooth out anything I was sliding over.

I did a 1.25 inch body lift and a 1 inch motor mount lift to accommodate the moderate tummy tuck. I did the tummy tuck and gained some space and a stronger and flatter surface in the middle. That required exhaust work as well as transfer case shifter work in the form of a cable shifter.  I did a gas tank skid that took advantage of the extra space gained from the body lift.

Somewhere along the line I tried several different front diff covers because with no lift I had a clearance issue with most of the options.  I also changed bumpers which gave me better clearance in the rear and better recovery points which have come in handy, especially while running over Joe's tow strap.

While doing all this I've been planning for next year's work which will be doing a lift and changing to 33s with all the other associated things that will take.  I'm planning with the eventual goal of running 35s in a few years and wheeling mostly on the easy trails I'm already on and the moderate ones the club runs.  I've found in the last year that those are the places I enjoy spending my time on.

In 2 years I'm planning around lockers and regearing and everything else I'll need to safely run 35s.  That will be about the point that the 33s waiting in my basement to go on next summer are worn out with the mileage I put on and I'll be getting ready to step up to 35s.  I'm blessed with not having the ability to spend as much as I'd like all at once on Jeep parts so it's forced me to go slow.  Plus I like researching and planning.  That's just my 2 cents, but it's been a system that's worked for me.

This was much more fun to think about than that work for work I'm avoiding at the moment.

Theorycrafting jeep builds always is better than actual work.... part of why i started the thread, kinda fun to talk about and hear everyone's opinions.

Ill order the gas tank skid tomorrow. Hopefully i can slap all this stuff on soon as the jeep doesnt fit in the garage with the hard top on now.

THEN hopefully i get my application accepted and can go drive around with you all, as the 2 huge take aways are skidplates and see whats its like to wheel in CT.

Yeah, if you don't have a body lift on you may have an issue with the gas tank skid as most require one.

BTW, there is NO legal wheeling in CT.  We mostly wheel mall parking lots and Ice Cream shops.

I’ve got this diff cover for sale for a Dana 30 for 40 bucks will ship on buyers dime

Well then forget everything I said haha. The front of an XJ in stock form is the same mounting points as a TJ. I'm guessing if someone put a set of ford axles in the Jeep, it isn't using any stock mounting points anymore. One thing to keep in mind with stock XJ front axles vs TJ, the XJ doesn't use cam bolts, so you will need adjustable control arms in order to get the right castor angle.
