Tough XJ Question

I bought this 1994 xj from vermont..it has 99000 miles on it  and the motor runs and starts up great but is really rusted being it is a VT jeep. I know it needs new transmission lines, brake lines and manifold, everything else seems good. If i got these replaced how long do you guys think this jeep will last. i know this is a tough question to answer without seeing the jeep. the reason i ask is because my roomate at college needs a car to last him about 6 months while we are at school. i posted this jeep up for sale a month or so ago so im sure some of you have seen it.
Thanks
Nick

if you need more info to answer the question let me no!
figured Detour would be a help on this one

It doesn't always matter how much mileage an engine has on it - it's what kind of miles.

Were they hard miles with lots of stop and go, mostly highway, was the engine beat on with holeshots, etc., etc.

I drive my Jeep likes it's a Porche, BUT... it's well cared for with all of the proper maintenance at the right time.

I'm assuming that this Jeep has the 4.0 I-6, which is my choice for a Jeep engine. I know people who have well over 300,000 miles on their 4.0's - I have over 160,000 on mine and it shows no signs of fading anytime soon. The biggest question for me is how often was the oil changed? After that you'd want to know how often the other fluids were changed and was it serviced regularly. If you buy it or have already bought it, get the fluids done right off the bat (Tranny fluid and filter, oil, diffs, etc.) Sheet metal can always be welded, rivited or patched (within reason), but if it doesn't run good...

It's really hard to give advice without seeing and hearing the vehicle.

Hope this helps and good luck. Your best bet is to have a mechanic go over it. Also, be realistic - you're going to have to put some $$$$$ in this vehicle with that kind of mileage.

Groundhog pretty much covered the mechanicals.
As far as trhe rusted xj body, it depends on how deep the rust got into it. In the pics, I saw the rockers are rusted out. Lots of xj's have this and still keep going, but if the main rails are also gone, it doesn't have much for support at that point. Don't even think of wheeling it if it's that rusted. It will fold easily with offroad persuation.

hey thanks alot guys, sry it is the straight  six and everything is original but thanks for all the input and help. any other input is much apprecated

it was used mainly around a farm to winch out stuck tractors and go places a normal vehicle couldnt go :grinyes: :grinyes:

If the rockers are rotted out, there are other areas that quickly follow, like around the rear wheel wells inside the vehicle, above the spring pockets etc.  A little rot above the leaf spring pockets could be a hell of a lot worse than some rocker rot.  Usually where there is some rot there's a lot more you don't see.  Check it carefully.  Though there are plenty out there that are not that badly rotted.
