As mentioned in my other thread, my transmission was acting up, engine just revving briefly when I accelerated from a stop. The place that is checking my oil leak checked the tranny fluid and found it 4 quarts low...Now I know what you're saying..."Red, your a dumba$$. How could you let it get it that low?" In all fairness, I am a dumba$$ and have little/no auto knowledge. I have only had this XJ for about a year and assumed (apparently wrongly assumed) that the dealer I got it from checked all of this stuff and that I would be okay for a while. Anyway, the first thing that the shop did was add fluid. They test drove it and report no slippage, so I guess that is good news. However, they are having their transmission guy look at it more closely today.

you could have burnt up some of the stuff inside.. i forget what all the parts are called. If they flush the fluid, it could be worse than before, becuase it takes all the little peices of crap that have found a home in there and filled a gap out, thus creating slippage and quicker wear.

I have a Auto and love it, but you have to treat it with a lot of care for it to last. Check level often and STAY OUT of mud and water. On my first Auto i was all over the mud, but one day i felt it slipping and thought i should change the fluid, i did and the next day it was slipping again. After two complete tranny rebuilds in three weeks it was finially right... oh and 3grand!!! all because i went into a mud/water pit up to my rockers.

A extended vent line would help, but they are a pain to put in the auto, cuase you have to drill and tap a new hole in the housing, meaning you have to take the tranny out... not worth it. Plus mud is just a pain to clean up and destroys everything.

Your XJ has an AW-4 tranny, just drive it the way it is for now. It probably will be OK. It is a stout tranny and can take quite a bit of abuse. I blew one of the tranny lines on my XJ and I didn't know it until it wouldn't move any more. I hooked the line back up put SIX quarts back in and it has been fine since. Don't let them tell you you need a new tranny until you drive it for a while, if it acts up then do something about it.

sounds good to me. the less cash i need to dump into this thing on fixes, the more mods i can get. :)

Wouldn't you know, I have 96 and 97 trannys. According to car-part
the 96 tranny will fit 91-96 and the 97 will fit only 97's. It might be a simple differance I don't know.

HAHAHAHA.

So here is the great news. The shop just called back and the diagnosis for the tranny and the RMS are the same. It's not oil leaking, but burned tranny fluid that is causing the smoke. The front tranny seal is toast, and according to them it's only a few inches away from the RMS. This makes sense to me becuase in all of the time that I've had the smoking problem since the RMS blew, I've never had to add oil. Then all of a sudden, the tranny starts slipping.

So the question is, WTF do I do now? They said that they could just put in a new pump, etc., but that would cost about 2/3 of a total rebuild. I only get the leak at high speeds on lnclines, so should I deal and just keep an eye on the fluid til the tranny dies, do a full rebuild, get a new tranny or just give up and buy a scooter?

This is right up you alley.

I would just drive it untill I had major issues. If it's only 1/2 broke, why fix it?
What do I know I drive a CJ, different mindset.

Drive it for now. In the meantime look for a deal on a used one. AW-4's generaly last a long time therefore they can be had pretty cheap unlike the tranny's in ZJ's. Next time I go to my favorite junkyard I'll get a price on one, I bet it will be under 4 bills.

Good lookin' out. Thanks.
