Tub repair

I need to do an imperfect tub repair.  Mine has been splitting down the seam on the driver’s rear corner for a while.  Recently split all the way up.  I’m thinking I could use a thin flat file to clean up both sides of the split.  Then use some automotive seam sealer to seal it back up and put a ratchet strap around it to hold it together while the sealer cures.  This is one of a few spots on the tub I need to do something about in the next couple of years.  I expect eventually this corner will be covered up by corner guards once I shell out the cash for them but that’s not a this year thing.

These are the 2 adhesives I’ve seen recommended before.  The 3m is about 1/2 the price.  From what I understand both should be high strength bonds.

If it’s rotten it won’t hold well or long. The adhesive is just for glueing it back not to do the rust repair correct?

Correct.  I think the rot came after the splitting started.  The split has been there for at least a year.  I haven't gotten into the back to see how bad it is.  There is another spot by the right rear body mount, and a couple of small areas to fix as well in the future.  I'm thinking next summer is going to be the time to get more into it, after I pick up corner guards to cover it up after.  So just temporary to hold the back corner together.

Thanks.  I think the TJ and LJ dimensions are different.

I've been eying something like this for a while, just haven't put the money down yet.

I had been looking at Savvy's for years but it looks like they no longer make them.

If it's splitting like that and there's surface rust and paint bubbling I think the inside is going to be rusted much worse and needs to be cleaned well so the sealer can have something to stick to

Metalcloak has corner armor for cheaper on sale this weekend

Here's the aluminum version  $859 https://metalcloak.com/lj-wrangler-aluminum-extended-corner-guards.html

Steel version is $589  https://metalcloak.com/lj-wrangler-extended-corner-guards.html

I feel like I'm going to end up spending money sooner than I expected.  Not ordering right now, but it's probably time to prioritize this one sooner than later.

What about a couple stitch welds, especially if you are covering it up later?

That what I figured I’d eventually do once I ground off some paint and rust and had the materials to repaint then cover in 1 shot.  It’s going to look like crap from my work underneath, but once covered it won’t matter as long as the rust is gone.

I’d say wire wheel/grinder to clean surfaces, glue/stitch weld, tag with black rustoleum, and cover as soon as you can!

I would absolutely try to clean the inside up best as possible and epoxy it back together. The worst that can happen is it doesn’t hold. Be sure to mask off your paint before you start.
When it all glued, get that thing undercoated!!!!! Fluid film, NHoil, woolwax, motor oil all are all great!

If it were my jeep I would try the epoxy, but would go one step further and use some sheet metal screws or pop rivits to hold the 2 parts together

Buy these. I have them on my LJ. If you want full corners, commission one of the plasma table guys to cut out the matching flat piece. Metalcloak is shipping their full LJ corners in 4 pieces. I'd be interested in getting in on that too.

I have those in aluminum on the short bus! They work great! Probably holding my seams together too :rotflmao:

Got it glued together tonight.  Want to give it 24 hours to cure so should be done by time to leave for Fall Crawl.

Ground down the gap on both sides with a Dremel wheel until most of the rust between pieces was gone  and I was getting sparks.  Glued it and put a strap around it.  From the inside the tub is clean.  The crack happened first, followed by the rust bubbles months later so I’m guessing the rust starts at the crack.

Maybe I can get in tomorrow and put a few screws through it too but I’ll see how this goes first.

Next summer I’ll plan to grind out the rust,  separate, clean and reconnect the sections, and paint and cover the whole thing with corner guards.
