So I'm swapping out my u-joints, easy job, right? Do the rear end of the driveshaft, duct tape the caps on while I remove the front ones. No problem. So I'm putting the caps back on the front and I'm having trouble getting one to seat. A few good TAPS with a hammer and an old socket and I CRACK the cap. WTF, pull it all apart. Seems one roller pin dropped into the cap while I was putting it on.
So now I have to dig throught the trash and find the best cap out of the 8 I just took off. Finally got it back together.
Also put on a new cowl gasket and ordered the paint. :bling:

those joint presses are ok but it is hard to judge how much pressure your putting on the joint. i actually broke an ear off using mine.

Yeah, it works, but....It's called a "Ball Joint Press" for a reason. I much prefer the gentle 8oz. hammer tap approach. Much more feel for properly placed caps. Then again, I do u-joints about 5 times a week. Damn snaprings!!! :madred: :banghead:

wouldn't have soldved his problem anyway,

press would have cracked the cap just as easyily as the hammer.

and I have tapped ujoints into the chromoly shafts, its not that horrible.

one of my buddies recently made a jig setup for his shop press to swap ujoints. that thing is sweet.

Yeah, I'd like to see your cute little hammer work with chromoly axle shafts. The tolerances are much tighter than factory poop. :disagree:

I've had no problems using the hammer method on my 'joints, both in and out

Thanks Dave 8) . Glad to see someone else knows what I'm talking about. It all has to do with how "Garage Rated" you are.
