I was told that the gears in the D44 I bought are 3.55. How can I be sure of it? There is no tag and the D44 is apart. I was thinking that if I count the teeth on the ring gear and divide that by the number of teeth on the pinion gear that I would get the ratio. Does that make sense? :?

That is exactly how you do it. I looked at the tag on a D30 earlier today, it said "47 11" which is 4.27s, which was also stamped on the tag. Good luck, let us know what you have.

Thanks for the confirmation. I'm gonna count them this weekend. 8)

Most gear sets will have the "47 11" or what ever the gear set happens to be stamped right on the ring gear. It makes it much easier than counting them.

3.54 should be "46-13" in a dana 44

If you take a playing card, a toothpick, some Gorilla glue and a blind fold you can easily figure this out.

1. Gorilla glue the toothpick between one of the sets of teeth.

2. Place the blind fold over your eyes.

3. Stand the playing card upright into the same groove that has the toothpick glued into it.

4. Hold the card firmly in one hand...DON'T MOVE

5. Have a friend, neighbor or complete stranger rotate the wheel while the jeep is lifted

6. Count the clicks the playing card makes before you here the odd toothpick click again.

This will tell you how many teeth are on the gear.

Disclaimor: Kids don't try this at home.
That might work better if the D44 wasn't already apart!
