Winch Line?

I'm going to be needing a winch line for my 9.5ti warn.  I looking for sugestions on what line I should get.  I know I don't want the synthetic rope.  Are there any places local I can have one made up?  Also Stock the winch came with a 125 foot line.  I was thinking only going with a 100 foot line to save a little weight, or is this a bad idea and on occasion have we needed something more that that on some of the trails we do in the North East.  I open to all suggestions.

I don't even own a winch yet, but from what I've read, I don't even see the point of replacing the line if you're not going to go synthetic.

It's hard to put a price on safety.

If I were going to replace with steel I would check around on a few boards, guys are taking brand new steel off and practically giving it away when they buy new winches and synthetic line

My AMSTEEL BLUE line has actualy lasted longer than any steel line I've had.
Steel lines usually get trashed because they get kinked when rewining you can't always do a perfect job - never a problem with the synthetic.
For just the number of scars avaoided from fish hooks, I  would go rope again.

just a note.  I have been hit by a piece of breaking synth rope.  it still hurts like an MF.

you still need to weight it as it will still whip around and do some damage.  only nice thing is is doesn't have as much mass as the steel.  and it doesn't fish hook.  I have had steel fibers cut through a 2 layer palm leather glove.

That being said,  I am gonna keep the steel on my jeep for the abrasion and cut resistance as I used my winch for a lot of work type stuff.

But if I ever find the need I have a 180 feet of endura 12 (another rope companies amsteel equivalent)  ready to go

O.K, you guys talked me into it.  I ordered some 5/16 master pull line thats rated for 14,500lbs.  Got a real good price on ebay.  $130 for 100feet with the 10ft chafe protector and ss thimble.

My winch plate came in yesterday so I will have a winch on my rubi this weekend!

should you get a different style snatch block to use with the synthetic line?  Bruce, don't forget the hawse style fairlead.

Donny, thanks for checking in!  We installed the new winch and plate during the downtime wrenching on Rey's XJ.  Roller Fairleed will be OK with synthetic for a while if the fairleed hasn't already been scuffed up with the steel line.  No fairlead for now since we mounted the winch 1st.

a polished hawse style may be added down the road
