Support your local vendors.  Go with a Superwinch.  Great product.  Love mine.  Local shops, local vendors, local support.  Quick turnaround.

Sample conversations:  (improvised and exagerated)

Warn customer:  "Hi, I just ordered a winch from your company."
Warn employee:  "What's your order number?"

Superwinch customer:  "Hey Detour, what's up?"
Detour:  "Hi, "Jeff" how've you been?"

(the names have been changed to protect the innocent.)

Bottom line,

Superwinch rules.

Bob - quality come's with a price.  Just ask some of the NEJeep folks with a MileMarker
Stop by the Rally Sunday and ask a bunch of folks with a winch for feedback. I'd stick with a Warn or SuperWinch (too bad your brother snagged that one off Holly's XJ - at least you got a Warn bumper out od it )  IMO -  Detours is the way to go for a winch purchase

I'm JeepinMaxx and I approve of this message  :grinyes:

May protect the innocent, but it incriminates others

IMHO - When you think about what you want a winch to do, pull a 3500 lb. vehicle out of a "stuck" situation (especially if you're wheeling alone), you don't want to cut corners.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for trying to keep things under a budget, but some things, you just get what you pay for.

While I am biased, there are some things to keep in mind when making any purchase like this.  There are a lot of low-cost winch companies around nowadays.

Can you get spare parts, like a motor, or a solenoid, or a handheld controller? (Maybe you don't need this today, but you may in the future.)
Who do you call?
Do they stock the parts?
How long has the company been around?
Do they have a track record of quality?
What kind of service will you get, if you need it?
Will you be without the winch for 6 weeks if it breaks?
Will you have to pay to ship the product to somewhere like California for service?

If you can ask those questions and be happy with the answers, then maybe it's a great deal for you.  I'm not saying any particular companies are deficient in these areas, I'm just saying they're good questions to ask.

Scott from Superwinch.

You guys rule - Thanks for your support!  While we had too many events this year to be able to donate a complete winch to you, we are glad to be an active product-donating sponsor this year of the Rally, and also of the 4WD event in Shrewsbury MA on Oct 15.

To shed some light on this, i'll relay a personal experience. I had buried my XJ in my own back yard bad. And I mean BAD. Quicksand bad. I beat on my Superwinch for over an hour. Countless pulls againt a 3ft embankment that had the nose of the XJ stuffing down and into it instead of up and over. The kind of pulls that break winch cables. At one point, the winch motor started to sound a bit different. Not scary different, but just made a different tone to it than i had remembered. Now keep in mind the winch was still functioning, and it did get me out even after running it hard for another 30 minutes with the new noise. I called Detours, who placed a call to the guys over at Superwinch. Within an hour, I had an RGA warranty number, and was told to get it over to them. No questions asked. Not even what i was doing, or did I stall it 20 times. Nothing. Just "Send it on over and we'll fix it up".

So I pack it into the trunk of the Kia, and take a ride over. Some of the nicest guys over there. We had a chat about wheelin'. They showed me some of their own rigs. I got to meet one of the R&D engineer guys. Very cool. So I leave the winch with them,  and then say we'll give you a call when we take a look at it. 11AM the next morning i get a call. Winch is all set, come pick it up. No charge. 11AM THE NEXT MORNING!

Moral of the story. I blew up a Mile Marker E8000 with less than 18 months and 50 pulls. It left me stranded in a HUGE mud whole up at the Farm. Chucked it into the garbage and have never looked back.

The guys at Superwinch were super cool. Can't thank them enough.

I think the moral of the story is......

It's good to deal with the local guys :2cents:

Just an additonal note.

Superwinch is good,  They are local.  Warn is good as well.  and they customer service is on par with superwinches.  a buddy fo mine was given a m12000 winch that was "broken"  well the problem was the motor.  He called up Warn to ask how to test things to see if it is the brushes or the rotor.

next thing he knows they are shipping a new motor and new solenoid pack.

hey guys thanks a lot for all of your opinions...i guess i will buy a mile marker :grinyes:! thanks a lot guys :grinyes: im joking...ill start saving for a warn or super winch...or i can steal my brothers!!! :mad02:

Just get a friend with a winch.  It's much cheaper  :grinyes:

I read a write up on those chinese winches.  The cast zinc gears really did not impress me.

Every chinese tool I've seen, the motor never makes close to the power it claims.  It always bogs down.

Find used if you don't want to pay new prices but a used super or warn will probably last longer.

YEAH SUPERWINCH

Detours all the way. I went into his shop looking at winches for the future and he showed me the stats side by side comparisons and everything. superwinch blew them out of the water, not to mention its a better value. I've only used mine twice but I love the thing.

Oh yeah and local buisness is always a plus
