Wrangler tire width question.

I just bought a 2000 Wrangler Sahara for my daugher Alexa. You guys have never met this daughter because she only wheels high-end events that include hotels, pools, pig roasts, etc...

I am putting 2" BDS spring lift on and was wondering if I could use the stock rims to fit a 31x11.5 wheel? The rig has these amazing 16" sahara aluminum rims that we what to keep.

If the answer is no, how about 31x10.5?

And if you are wondering if this rig will become BrokenTJ the answer is no, ( that will be Anthony ), this car will do no off-roading that I know about.

The general rule of thumb for max tire width on a rim is 1.4 times the width of the rim. And again, i say general.

8" rim x 1.4 = 11.2" so an 11.50 would be fine.

So I can assume a 31x11.5 mounted on stock rims will fit a TJ with 2" lift.

Yes, that would be a nice setup. May kill some power on the highway, but it would be a nice looking rig.

If that is a 16" rim then you could run one of two very common tires. 235-85-16 (industrial pickup size, find them everywhere) for almost 32 inches height and ~9" wide. 265-75-16 which is another common tire with a ~11" width.

So - with that formula - is it bad to run 33x12.50 on 15x8" rims?

According to the manufacturers it is. Any tire shop will tell you that you need at least 9" of rim to run a 12.50, and it is why you will see 90% of 12.50's on a 10" rim as there are not many 9" rims made.

Personally, i have used undersize rims to aid in retaining the bead when aired down. I have run 12.50's on 8" rims plenty of times.
